Does this mean that someone else could buy the domain? Could I buy Halfords.com and the sell it back to Halfords?
No, not unless they continue to ignore the issue for a few days. As mentioned above, the domain name goes back to the registrar for a while before being put back into the 'pool' and other people are able to register it.

Funniest thing I've seen this week.

Why does it not surprise me? Incompetency at its best.

I'm guessing loo paper is in pretty short supply up at Halfords head office IT department this morning. Lets face it, as an IT department its a pretty basic thing to remember.
Especially as you'd have it set to auto renew.

I struggle to think that someone wouldn't sign off that bill

I suspect this will turn into a major issue for Halfords, the amount of dosh they must be losing from e-shop sales will be rather significant.
I think the P45 aeroplane will be gliding its way to the guilty party's desk as we speak.

Very odd. Even if it wasn't set to auto renew, they would have been sent reminder emails by Network Solutions.

What's worse, their .co.uk domain just points to the .com domain.

I imagine the site hosting the adverts also hosts some saucy ones, so its just flagged up.

Probably typical big company accountancy arrogance- get a bill, make the feckers chase several times and wait at least 90 days
