I was going to leave this because they weren't aimed at me but:

How do you know what a stranger on the Internet can and can't afford?

How does having a £30k budget give someone more of a clue?

You've some very wild, vulgar and nasty assumptions in those statements and to be honest it shows the ugliest side of PH.

You began a thread talking about this not being a site for enthusiasts, your most recent post is one that makes you seem to believe that the size of your wallet is more important than a passion for cars. If you are happy with your choices good but you mention them in every other thread & I'm certain that there are a huge amount or people who are unable to afford £70k worth of motor who show far more commitment to being a petrol head than you, yet manage to be nice to those who are well off and there are many exceptionally well off members on here who own fleets worth more than my house but do so with humility and the ability to respect that wealth is no measure of how enthusiastic you are.

Step back and read some of your own posts then reflect on the irony of this thread.

For a family man it's a cracking all round package and anyone who has £30k to spend on a car has far more of a clue than you.

The M135i isn't for all for sure but to just insult the car and anyone that drives it is simply retarded.

It's won all sorts of awards, it's a five star Evo car - maybe it's YOU that hasn't a clue (and clearly never driven one - yes I HAVE driven an old Boxster - oh and it BEAT the latest one on Top Gear too and isn't even a proper sports car)? I also detect a lot of bitterness in your posts - very telling.

We accuse Americans of not understanding irony - but it seems such is lacking here lol!

The initial complaint was that enthusiasts seem to have disappeared. Yet when some of them get together the above results. Maybe there are as many enthusiasts as before but because they're such a socially awkward bunch they never manage to associate with each other. Or end up in some kind of horrendous argument or fight!

So perhaps they're all sitting indoors, far too angry to go outside.

However I think it's all become fractured along status symbol lines. Car enthusiasm is about driving too fast, breaking stuff and trying to fix it. It doesn't concern conspicuous consumption. There are cars to do that in, Veblen would be proud, but they don't really define enthusiasm - not in my world anyway.

I'd far rather talk to boy racers in a car park than dullards debating whose German boring thingy is more expensive, and how much of a better person that makes him.

I've given Vlad the benefit of the doubt up until now.

Unwarranted comment imo.

I wonder if I can afford an M135i scratchchin What do you think Vlad?

Wow - I have said it before too but this guy really is something else..

One of the hilarious points is that he seems to consider himself as wealthy, he owns a freakin van and all things considered a fairly cheap car - he also rents his house. Oh, anyone can lease an m135i btw ;-)

Well Vlad, you cant afford a 911 turbo s, anyone that can afford a 120k car has more of a clue than you...

An enthusiast would not care how much you have to spend, only that you are involved and share that similar interest - God knows what old Vlad is enthusiastic about...oh wait... HIMSELF!

Me too.

It'd almost be funny if he didn't clearly believe his own hype.

If he's an "enthusiast" I'm happy not to be put in the same category.

There's an overused cliche in surfing - the best surfer is the one having the most fun. I think this applies directly to driving too.

I came here a few years ago for the cars.

Despite being a massive petrolhead, I now rarely visit the car areas of the forum.

I spend 90% of my time here in News/Photography/Lounge/Technology etc.

One thing that does put me off the car stuff is the endless questioning and debate about how cars are paid for, which is the single most irrelevant thing I can think of on a motoring forum.

No, but no one, gives a st how much cars cost, how they were paid for or 'funded' and certainly not how that particular person can afford them.

The only important things to me are stuff like:
What is it like to drive?
How does it sound?
How reliable is it?
What do you like and dislike?
How fast it it?

Other forums don't seem to have these sort of constant 'money issues' like PH.

This is very true, but there are a lot of posters on PH that for some reason do care, I find it very strange there are those that want to tell you they paid CASH and those that want to belittle people that lease/PCP.

It's weird, remember all the bhing around CH buying a 911 4.0RS, Christ I thought the servers were going to melt!

Step too far dude! Please please take a little bit of advice, as I suspect what you've previously assumed is all just a bit of internet banter has suddenly gone very wrong for you. I have a slight feeling you might actually be taking all this stuff to heart, and that's not good

Step away from this thread, review what happened, and see if you'd change anything next time

You're not very nice, are you?

In a lot of your posts, you bang on about what you have and what you can afford more than anything else - like you 'need' to tell us all what you can afford.

You come over, on here at least, as a bit of a muppet who's always anxious to show off about what 'you' have - not the best of traits.

Very Alan Partridge-ish - even to quoting figures from Top Gear to prove (to yourself) you have a better car! lol

You know what Vlad, I could afford a brand new ferrari if I wanted but my newest car is a 2006 (2008 if you count the wife's). I drive them through choice, not because it's the best/most expensive I can afford. I haven't driven an M135i and I'm not going to. They don't interest me at all although I imagine they are a very good car. I would't class it as an enthusiast's car although an enthusiast may drive one. They are a good blend of practicality and performance and will suit many perfectly. I believe BMW should be applauded for making such a car. You and countless others will argues that it is just as fast as an M3, and in the hands of most it probably will be, hand it to a couple of guys who really know what they are doing though and it won't be anywhere even close.

I'm glad it's not just me that has the opinion you're not very nice, particularly your comment towards me about being a family man. I am married and with a beautiful daughter. She has been driven about in the Evo today and she also comes in the M3 (s) the hassle of getting her in and out of the back of my coupe is a price I'm willing to pay for the pleasure of that car. Most of the time however she travels in our sensible diesel family car that we bought when my wife got pregnant.

To attack somebody's opinion based on their financial status is just ridiculous. Particularly as you are judging this status purely on what car a man drives. I'll bet you are one of these idiots that drives past me in my 10 year old M3 in your spanky new M135i and laughs at the poor man. Laugh away pal, I certainly couldn't give a fk. I think your reasons for buying your car are becoming obvious. You could afford a true enthusiasts car and a sensible family-mobile for dog and child duties but you have chosen instead to take the shiny new flavour of the month compromise right off the back of your last shiny new flavour of the month compromise (335d).

Where have all the enthusiasts gone indeed?

Absolutely.

That whole "how does CH afford a 4.0RS?" thing was one the most retarded wastes of internet bandwidth ever.

It turned what should have been a great car discussion into some stupid financial debate.
That thread pretty much summed up the worst of PH's money obsession to me.

CH should be given a medal for having the balls to drive the cars he does. God knows how he manages it but manage he does and I'll bet he grins like a cheshire cat every time he opens the door.

Maybe the finance aspect comes into it more on PH as it has such a broad spectrum of posters. Most other forums tend to be more specific and will generally attract a lesser range. You're not going to find a corsa driver and a lambo owner arguing on drift works.

Unfortunately PH is full of people buying into hype and spouting other peoples opinions and making comments like you can't afford to have an opinion.

I've spent about 4 hours today just wasting petrol with the stereo off and the windows open, giggling like a fool and revelling in the noise and drama. Unfortunately the car I did it in is only worth about 13k so I can't have been enjoying myself as much as my neighbour in his 30k diesel volvo.

^^^^ Yes
I love driving. I don't give a st what the car is, or how powerful it is, I just love the challenge of wringing out the fastest journey time out of a piece of ste. I don't care much for polish, or shows, and I find, having been a member of a number of one make classic car clubs, that my love of honest patina, and using old cars in the rain, is often frowned upon. If you add up all the repairs and bodges I have done over the years, I have also restored a couple of cars, expect it took me 25 cars to do it, because each repair was required to either pass the mot, or get the bloody thing going so it gets me to work tomorrow, so I don't have to take 3 buses.
If I can I do all my own servicing and repairs, mainly because I am either skint, or because I don't trust so called professionals to rip me off.

But I'll have Kurma, or perhaps a Balti
