What do you look for in 'Noise'?

RE the V16 BRM I always think 'a tale told by an idiot , full of sound and fury and signifying nothing' from Macbeth . I echo the comment about Silverstone Classic - a nice memory is being in the Wing and standing within touching distance of the sublime Ferrari 246 (not the road car , but Italian GP winning F1 car)as it was being warmed up. Whoever said a V6 didn't sound nice hadn't heard this piece of pure opera .

No - of course not - I was just making an aside , as we all do from time to time. Back on the noise it makes -it is extraordinary and nothing I have ever heard 'live ' remotely resembles it- not many 16 cylinder cars around. And supercharging does add an added tonal quality (see also ERA Six and Bugatti Eight ) - a sort of 'whaap' when throttle is blipped.
Anyone heard the 4.2 Ford V8 in the Indy winning Lotus 38 ? Heard it at Goodwood years ago and it'd have woken the dead - I remember the wooden paling fence behind the car being pushed back in time with the revs.

for me not sure it gets any better than listening to that accelerate up the gears out of Arnage, Ferrari 333 sp a close 2nd
Loads of car noise I could listen to all day long. Virtually anything on a set of Webber DCOEs or similar sounds great. Even my old Zetec Westfield. I like the 'dirtiness' the carbs add to the noise.
On the fuel injected side of things very few 4cyl engines do it for me. They have to be on individual throttle bodies and pulling some proper revs. I love 5 and 10 cylinders for the similar tone both produce and Audi Quattro memories. V8's I'm more of a cross-plane Yank muscle kinda guy. Most of the Ferraris are just too much at the top end and 4cyl like driven sensibly, but the 355 sounded great and I'd probably love driving one round in 1st gear! Everything in a petrol car above a V10 sounds great so long as you can hear it. The BRM V16 is a real favourite though.
My real world love is for straight and flat 6s though. Particularly in more racy states of tune that hardening noise as the revs climb is just great.
