RE: PH Heroes: Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9
Discussion
I absolutely love these cars! It all started with the rally car bought in 2009 (the best rally car I could afford!!) and I've since had two more, and am hoping to buy another soon. One sadly written off against a stag which showed me how little metal they are built from.
They are so involving and alive compared to anything modern and every journey is an adventure. They can still be reliable too although I might not be saying that after an MOT due next week.
A few photos of mine:

What a car! But main reason is its manly, heavy steering, properly direct behaviour. Nobody dares make something reactive and transparent like that these days, so only modern equivalents are Porsche gt3 rs-s I suppose. Elise has feel but does not fight for grip with its front end like its life depends of it, while at the same letting tail loose like 205 gti (and must be said other peugeots of that era). Too much sweetnes and interference in modern cars. New Clio 200, great car though it is, is more like benign version of 106s or 306s, which allready did not have that masculinity and brutality of 205 gti. Hard to find something similar really.
And one should not forget a man who contributed most, Jean Baudin:

There was a good article in Autocar around about the time the 206GTi 180 came out featuring him I think and why he wouldn't be allowed to make a car that handled like the 205GTi these daysAnd one should not forget a man who contributed most, Jean Baudin:

I remember reading this, but not sure why that would be the case with modern stability control systems.NoelWatson said:

The public used to think it wasn't good such cars being available from "cheaper" car makers

I assume the stag was the four legged variety and not the triumph variety? 205 would have fared much better if it was the triumph!;)They are so involving and alive compared to anything modern and every journey is an adventure. brilliant post smike- brought back many happy memories of dashing around sheffield and the peak district in 1989...happy days
I'm considering (like the rest of pistonheads it would seem!) getting one of these with a view to preparing a trackday car. Can anyone reccommend any decent 205gti forums/owners clubs that are current (i've come across a few that seem to be dormant)? cheers

I found that! Started looking yesterday and found one particular chap doing a bare shell restoration on a Miami Blue 1.9 GTi. Utterly stunning, he was doing it perfectly and I was enjoying reading. But then it just stopped smack bang in the middle of his project showing just pictures of lots of parts. Gutted! Due to this damn thread I've been looking at all the 205 for sale.
I've never really thought about the fact that the standard basic 205 GL etc looks utter se both inside and out (unlike comparing it the basic golf GL and a GTi, which still looked pretty cool in basic guise)
But add some cheap plastic body mouldings, some 14 or 15" alloys, a pair of fog lights, and then inside, some red carpets, 2 sport seats and a different steering wheel and it goes from something you wouldn't be seen dead in to a cracking looking car.
