I prefer the black wheels (obviously, or I wouldn't have bought them), but it's entirely a matter of taste. I like 'em, I don't really care whether anyone else does.

Not a great fan of black wheels, but they look pretty good on my daily driver...

I first had black wheels on my Alfa 155 V6. It was one of the first mainstream cars to have them as a factory option - a BTCC look alike. Had them on pretty much every car since (except on a diesel Galaxy). Got them now on my Cayman R and also on the Skoda Yeti. I like them.

I agree with the OP, black wheels often don't look as good, even if they look good.

However, a grey or anthracite wheel can look great.

Black 997 wheels on my 996.
And this is a good example of the problem. They could be black Peugeot 206 wheels for all we know because you can't actually see them.

But nobdy in their right mind would even consider doing this. They could be aftermarket or Offical Porsche though. That aside i dont think 206 would actually fit...

In summary then, in response to the OP's original question of "Do all cars look worse with black wheels?" the answer is that other than racing cars and Porsches on Fuchs, yes, pretty much all of them do.

I liked the RS500 wheels, so got a set for my ZS (Focus not mine, sadly)

Ive read similar posts in this thread regarding not being able to see what style/type wheels they are if they are black.

It seems bit of a daft view point.

If you cant see what style a black wheel is then i dont think its because of the colour of it but more to do with your eye sight. I dont think ive ever seen a black wheel that ive not been able to distinguish from a reasonable distance.

It's like saying black cars look wrong because you cant see the details on it. Sometimes it's not about being able to see the details and more about something looking right and suiting the overall look.

I agree. I'm from an era where steel wheels were common place, different wheel trims were the option and alloys were special.

So whenever I see black wheels, i just see this:

Black wheels, I just don't get it.

I personally cannot stand black wheels. All wheels should be silver and definitely not chrome or spacky fluorescent pink or green as seen on chav wagons. The only exceptions to standard silver alloys are tasteful hub caps eg Rolls/Bentley or the painted style eg 70's Mercedes.

The only other type of wheel I find acceptable are these...........

So you can tell which wheels are fitted to that 996, can you?

Porsche have always allowed you the option of having your wheels colour coded to match the rest of your car. There's a dark blue Cayenne around my area with matching dark blue wheels which is OK, but it allows for some questionable colour schemes.

Sadly, no manufacturer upholds decency standards anymore...

However, we have to remember that without the horrendous taste and choices of the oil nations, many of our beloved brands would not exist. If the cost of continued Ferrari success is that they sell some overpriced 458's in rani gold with deer scrotum leather to people who won't drive them in the middle east, so be it. It still provides us mere mortals with poster material / cars to drive past them occasionally making us grin =)
