I have it set so if someone phones my mobile and I it saying I'm busy it forwards the call to my car phone.

But that's a separate phone number.... Full integration you'll have to look at a kit.
Right, so I just put a PAYG sim in the car (there isn't one at the moment) and then just divert my phone to that number. I don't need to dial out, but receiving calls is always useful.

How have you insured yours?

Having run the former SOTW Merc 300CE since last August it was time to buy something capable of more than mid teens mpg figures on my 90 mile commute! I almost talked myself in to a 530d at the main dealers this weekend but I can't bring myself to commit to finance on a big dirty diesel when in reality I want an M3 or M5 for the weekends so I bought a cheap diesel for work.
The Merc is now for sale and has been replaced with this,a 2002 S60 D5 SE for the princely sum of £995. Lovely old bus, near mint condition with 3 owners and plenty of history. Brilliant stereo too. Averaged a claimed 58.1mpg to work and back today, but I will reserve judgement until next refil as that seems optimistic!
Nope - did over 900 miles on one tank driving through France in one of these.
Very economical before all the emissions gubbins were thrown on later diesels.
They eat suspension bushes, front tyres and rear engine mounts.

And aint the turning circle a b******d?

You can get a E550 Elegance in W211 flavour though wink
Not in the UK you can't as far as I know.
E500 Elegance from 2007-2009 is the 5.5 388PS motor.

Yes, it is badged as E500 in the UK market and as E550 in other places. Came in Elegance, Avantgarde and Sport.

Here's a UK example E500 http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C511258

And a US version badged as E550 (albeit a Sport) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Benz-E-Class-AMG-...
I knew that, just getting my beard on wink
That UK car is the biz.
Each time I drive the Mrs S211 320 CDi I am really impressed yet I am also thinking how good that car would be with a petrol V8. For me the S211 is at a barge sweet spot at the moment, plenty within thread budget yet still a very modern car.

The w124 has started smelling of petrol in it (I caught a quick whiff yesterday and there was a definite smell this morning).

The tank is only 2/3 full, and all fuel lines were replaced when I did all the suspension last year. There was a slight exhaust blow when I did the MOT in December and it needs a proper service - could it be running rich and the exhaust smell leaking into the car? I should have attended to it earlier in any case. Into the garage on Friday for a service exhaust in any case.

If it's leaking, even in a small way, you'd notice horrific fuel consumption. Sounds more like exhaust fumes. But you never know so best get it sorted.

My 220 w124 developed a leak on the pipe from fill up to tank. I believe its a common problem and the only way to fix is to replace or send the tank and neck away.

This is a thread car way out of thread budget. It's very nice but it's also madness, right?

Yes madness, maybe in ten years time when there are only cherished examples left but you could probably find a better one than that at half the price at the moment (I haven't looked) and with the 500 or 560 engine,

Where did you find one for under a thousand pounds? I've been looking at these lately and they all seem to be around £1500 with mileage around 150,000.

I've found one nearish to me with 146,000 on the clock. It does look nice but it's up for £1650.

Thanks.

Speaking of the S60 D5's, a colleague of mine has just scrapped his. Apparently the clutch failed, so it's left with a knackered clutch, DMF and gearbox. Not worth repairing at the value of the car. I previously had a 2.0 LPT model and I really liked that. Makes me wish there were more 5 cylinder petrol engines around.

I really like that and am tempted. The tow bar would have to come off though. Suspect the vendor's location may be limiting the potential pool of buyers?

Has your mpg dropped? Could be a leaking fuel filter. But then you would really notice your fuel consumption dropping.

Well, I don't know if it is complete madness? It is achingly beautiful?
I saw a W126 on the road yesterday for the first time in absolutely ages. It was so far ahead that I couldn't get a look at it but even from that distance it still cut a presence on the road.

I suspect buyers aren't going to be queuing for that one and so if a near-ish sort offer was to be put into the pot and left to stew for a while that car could be had for less.

I agree there should be more 5 cylinder engines out there - the one in my Alfa (2.4 10v diseisel) is a gem. A Mk.2 Focus ST is now high on my list of cars to try.

That's good you took it for a decent drive. Funny the seats are not heated I just assumed that was standard.

Regards the fault, "driver restraint fault" was the airbag light on too? I've never experienced this one, if the battery is low (car might have been sitting for a while) on charge it can throw some random errors. Ross has covered the others, the no disc is quite a common one.
Just one last point on the ride, it should be very comfortable, from the advert it looks as though its on 18" wheels? Never driven one on the 18's but I'd expect that to be even better than ride on the 19' car.

Providing the inspection goes ok it sounds like it could be a good buy.
Bit of an update on this; spoke to the BMW specialist who reported;
-minor oil leak, would need to clean to diagnose, but most likely sump gasket
-front brake pads about 60% worn
-"driver restraint fault" would require a replacement seat mat at around £300 fitted.

Unfortunately, they didn't pick up on the exhaust rattle which I'd noticed, but I did prove this to the dealer.

Anyway, the BMW Specialist said that it was a generally tidy car and pretty low risk, with no outstanding recalls.

On that basis, I shook hands with the dealer on £3490 and left them with a deposit on the agreement that they would repair the exhaust, have the drivers seat mat replaced and put on a fresh MOT.

I should be collecting it towards the end of next week, after which I might take a more active role in this thread. In the meantime, here's some photos...
Sounds fantastic, congrats!

Does the W124 have an evaporative loss system?

You're not wrong,I nearly hit my driveway gate when I got home,I thought something was jammed until I did a little research. It's like turning a ship after the W124 with its taxi turning circle!

It was on eBay,it had been on with a buy it now of £995 last week then relisted after a fraudulent bid but on a normal auction with a £900 start bid. I asked if he would be willing to take his original buy it now price and he did, kindly picking me up from the station and making me a brew and ensuring I liked it before he would take any money. Lovely bloke.
I wanted a V70 ideally but as you say some of them fetch a lot of money.
