How about one of these if the W211 doesn't work out? I would ask the seller to keep the cold for your viewing btw.

Call me a pedant but isn't a W211 an E class?

I'm quite fancying a W220, not sure about diesel power though, sure would be nice to be able to go somewhere without having to burn a gallon of petrol to get a loaf of bread though.

I have no idea what has happened to me... but I appear to have had an accident. I have an M140 on order that arrive at the end of july so sold my AMG and the Subaru. I needed to get something to tide me over so last weekend I bought an E34 520. Lovely thing. Then... by total accident I saw this: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/112011655825?sojTags=bu=bu...

and one thing lead to another...

so... erm. I now have 2 barges. The 126 needs some love. Its been parked for a few years and things like windows and central locking are all a bit sticky, car is also has a green mould over it, lights are a bit green too. Interior however is a revelation. Cannot see a mark and looks just as an 81,000 mile car should. Hoping to get it washed tomorrow and i'll see what it comes up like! Only rust I can find so far is the drivers side rear arch has a few tiny bubbles. Did I mention that there is no service history with the car? Only the purchase invoice from 1998 for £8000 from the Director of the Mandeville Hotel confirming the mileage in 1998 as 71k.

Well done indeed. A weekend cleaning and £300 thrown at a cheap paint-shop and you will be flying.

Great, great shedding. Love this sort of thing. Chuffed.

Fantastic work, 0-2 barges in such a short space of time is good going.

That W220 above looks rather nice, I like that colour a lot.

What do people think of this Volvo V70 T5 estate? I could do with replacing the Lexus with something more practical as eldest is about to go off to Uni. Is the geartronic to be avoided?

That AW box is fine in equivalent Saabs where it has ATF changes scheduled as standard. It can certainly handle the torque quite happily. Volvo didn't specify changes, so that's something to check, for sure - make sure you get it fully warm and check for banging or flaring.

Guys quick question. What are the new tax rules? If a car is currently taxed, when it gets sold is that tax automatically cancelled? Do I have to re-tax before I can drive it away? Is that a stupid question?

In bargey news, we've driven to the west coast of france over the last few days, putting about a thousand miles so far on our new W126 300SE. Lovely glidey stuff. 20L of petrol in the boot just in case.
We normally regard unseen distant barge purchase as the mark of a true Bargista, but purchase and then heading to the continent in short order sets a new level we must all now aspire to - well done! I think carrying on board reserve fuel as a hedge against striking French workers is also particularly commendable!
smile I think others here have had much more swashbuckling adventures, but I've never been over prepared for driving trips... tend to just get in and go..! The Merc had new fluids and filters by then and well, it's a big old Merc! If it cain't do the miles then it ain't no use.

Yes, technically.

Practically if it's taxed at purchase the only notification that the tax should be cancelled is when the seller sends the V5 up to the DVLA (or does it online).

hehe

To answer the question....you do indeed have to tax it before you drive away. It's not a daft question at all.

The missing proper stereo would put me off that one. May be possible to re-instate if the amp is still present and working.

Thanks for the info all.

On the train now to go and see it. If its good I'll have a scenic drive home, if not I'll have a perfectly comfortable sleep on the train back. smile

Good luck!

Liking the w126 purchases. Are these better than w124s for long distance wafting at reasonable speed?

Depends on the engine, and what you call a reasonable speed. The 124 is a significantly more modern car overall than the 126. It has much better rear suspension, much better aerodynamics, and on some cars a later generation of 4-valve engines five speed automatic gearboxes. All of which make a contribution to mile-munching. Against that, the S-Class was more expensively put together with more sound insulation and has significantly more lounging space.

The V8 126 models are pretty high geared and can clip along at a good pace without sounding busy. A six-cylinder 126 is okay on the motorway at 80 but doesn't have the effortlessness of a V8, nor of a late six-cylinder 124, especially a 320E. Fuel consumption is much better on the 124 than the 126. A 126 is basically a 20 mpg motorway car.

It doesn't really bother me, and probably not you, but it does bother some people so for the record: all W126 cars apart from the late-production 265 hp 500, and the European spec 560, are nowadays easy meat in a straight line for a modern two litre four-cylinder diesel saloon, e.g. a Merc C, E, or BMW 3 or 5.

Spotted this GS430 for sale. I have had itchy bidding finger all morning but have talked myself out of it as I think sub 20mpg would really sting after my diesel Merc.

I have bought 3 cars from this garage, all were well described and they are very pleasant and easy to deal with.

Can't go wrong with this one methinks.

I'm not normally a Lexus kinda guy but that does represent big car value, and looks well cared for. £37K new, that was.
