Out of interest, what is Car magazine like nowadays.

.
CAR is really bad nowadays, or it certainly was six months ago, I haven't even opened the last five or six that have arrived via subscription. I will make a point of cancelling it today, I think it's one that is paid for by card which is always harder/more inconvenient to cancel. I love to read car magazines but at a time that suits me, all the ones I receive by subscription tend not to get read properly. Think I will go back to the old way, cancel all subs and go and buy one when I fancy spending an hour or two reading the one magazine. I tried EVO online but didn't really like it.

SPOILER REQUEST: what was the finishing order of ECOTY?

I live in oz and getting paper based is 'sporadic' and I don't have suitable medium for App.

Really keen to hear how the Alfa went.

Cheers
Best sportscar - Triumph TR7
Best luxury car - Maserati Quattroporte III
Best small car - Renault 5
Best family car - Saab 99 turbo

(Sorry, I only read old car mags)
I wonder if the Porsche would win these days or the verdict would be similar?

A Vauxhall in 2nd place?

Was not as in depth as years gone by I felt. Was disappointing.
Thanks for that.

Yeah I do feel EVO became this business where a bunch of blokes got to piss about in their favourite cars all year and then remembered they better write a few words and stick it together with some pretty photos.

That is just a accurate summation of the whole automotive journalist industry, no?!

Having championed it a few posts ago I too felt eCoty was a bit short on depth. Last year's was a fairly epic in proportions but this seemed over pretty quick. Didn't seem like five days of road testing.

I've not bought a car magazine in years. Expensive, usually lacking in content considering the price. I pretty much get all my car related fix from Pistonheads.

I still buy MotorSport magazine. It's the best car magazine by far IMO.

After getting the ECOTY edition I have decided to cancel my subscription. Looked at the list of cars in ECOTY and named the winner and second place without looking at the article.

Had a laugh a couple of editions ago when one of the team complained his elbow was hitting the seat belt locking mechanism in a Golf. I don't suppose he had thought of moving the seat back a bit, he must have been sitting with the steering wheel against his chest to do that (or have ape-like arms).

You named the Golf in second spot without looking at the article?

The 911R was obviously the heavy favourite but with good reason when you see everything that's been said about it. If Porsche are particularly good at making the sort of cars evo staff like then what's the harm in that? It's not like you can say Porsche have made an average car and evo are only announcing it the winner because they're bias to all things Porsche.

That's 2 years on the bounce something from BMW M has finished last though.

Agreed, the Alfa barely got a mention! I was too left wondering where all the content had gone. I suspect the answer will be the video that will follow online in the next few weeks.

Alfa and Audi got about 2 paragraphs each.

If I spent a week with those cars on those roads I'd have plenty more to say!

Then towards the back they padded out the issue with pages of "essential accessories"!!

Utter dirge!!

When EVO came out and for the first, say 70-80 issues, its writing was one where it really brought you into the car and they took time to tell a story. They also looked like they started the magazine to do it their way and stuck to a core principle about how they felt a car mag should be. They would review everything and spend as much time on their own 2nd hand Audi Quattro or Lexus ISF in the Fast Fleet or thennew Alfa GTV as they would on the Ferrari F430.

But then they changed.

It's as if they got bored themselves and decided to concentrate on only the cars they really enjoyed as long as they were beyond the reach of the normal man. They basically disappeared up their own arses to smugly convey how awesomely best friends they were with anything Supercars.

No depth now, no soul and no interest. They don't even look interested themselves anymore.

It's a magazine that appears to have more interesting things going on behind the scenes than in the actual magazine

I remember a mag from 2001, Autocar I think which had an end of year test with M3,Evo 7and Clio V6 iirc.It was really good read and realistic.

They excluded supercars and stated that bringing a 911 turbo would be akin to 'having a machine gun at a paint balling contest'.

Always remember it fondly!

Evo writers leave to join digital content business. Didn't Jethro and Dickie do just that several years ago?

Remind me what happened to that venture?

I lik reading mags on the bog or in a sun lounger by the side of the freshwater pool at Reid's Palace in Madeira. No point in trying to read a Kindle there, sun's too bright for that.

Agree. Good. Do you know who has replaced him?

Don't expect the video to be anything but more smugness/wistfulness/guys pinching themselves AGAIN/twinkly music/sun flare/annoying voiceovers trying to portray some kind of higher level of being cause they've been driving fast car s for a few days, even though the voice recording is much later

I bought the ECOTY issue this month, didn't enjoy it which is annoying because I look forward to it. Two years ago was really good, last year was ok. This year was boring.

I'll certainly be interested to see what happens with DriveTribe - I'm not really sure what it will be like? Sort of like a cross between PH and Drivers Republic with more video content?

I keep buying the mags though - just find them easier to read than mags on an app

Enjoyed my afternoon tea at Reid's Palace...although I had to be content with stopping up the road from there at the Casa Branco - on a car note, never seen so many Polo G40s as I did round there in a fortnight

Subscribed to Evo for donkeys years. Admittedly, I can't seem to get on with the current issue. Just can't be bothered with it for some reason. However, it's usually an excellent read and I'm sure it'll be back on form next month. Still look forward to
It arriving after all these years.

Also buy Autocar and Octance and again, cannot imagine not buying them!
Agree completely however never cancel the subscription as it's still the best on the market.

Evo has unapologetically followed the price explosion of sports and super cars through the years, which salaries haven't kept up with.

They could certainly do with more real world focussed features ...... as an E46 M3 ex-owner, I looked forward to the long term "real world" experiences that they'd have. Lost all interest the second that the owner magicked £10k to throw at upgrades the week after. Get back in check with mortal humans on real world wages!!!

Could have been the writer though, I was disappointed when I saw it was Vivian doing the main article.

I thought the result was pretty fair, I didn't see the VW coming second even if the winner was clear to see a mile off. It does seem like the 911 R really does live up to the hype though so I can't blame them for their decision.
