Steve_75 and Richa.. must be talking about bottom of the range mondys, but even so, cant agree about a inert steering. Compared to what?

Mondeos are well know in car mags to be a pretty decent drive, as are BMWS.
I'm comparing the steering with my 75, the wife's 156 and the company Passat.

The 156 has the best steering of any FWD car I've driven - very direct and the level of assistance is just right. The 75 is obviously great because it has perfect 50/50 weight distribution and RWD.

I do have issues with the Passat steering, as it's an electronic system and is lacking in feedback. However, the level of assistance is just right and it's quite a bit 'heavier' than the steering in a MkIII Mondeo. It doesn't stall as often, either....

Dunno Rich, I just made the assumption wink

Was I wrong?

I think its because most owners of the higher spec models (particularly the ST petrol and diesel) kinda overlook the engine noise, and talk about the strengths instead.

Just like I did!!!

Its why I said at the bottom of my post that I tried to resist being drawn in!! Its peoples own opinion.

But, on the original point of this thread (forgetting for one sec who it came from, and the manner in which it was said) which was value for money, the mondeo makes a strong case. And yes, I know I have just stated the obvious.

So much of it is down to other things. Where I grew up we have an excellent (although quite small) franchised ford dealer, and hence my whole family are fairly ford loyal.

My last 5 cars:-
1996 Mondeo 1.8 LX
2001 BMW 325I
2003 BMW 525i ( E60 )
2005 Saab 93 Tid Vector Sport
2007 Mondeo 2.0 Tdci Titanium

In my opinion..

Best
1) BMW 325i ( Well built, solid, reliable )
2) Mondeo 2.0 Tdci ( As above but 45 Mpg compared to 20! )

Worst
1) BMW525i ( 15 dealer visits in 2 years/thumpflat tyres/poor interior quality )
2) Saab 93 ( Rattlebox )

Most fun
1) BMW325i
2) BMW525i ( when it worked & on glass smooth roads only )

Easiest to live with on Britains Beirut style roads
1) Mondeo 2.0 Tdci

HI may very well just be unlucky with mine, but the only other person I know who owns one has just had £2000 in repair costs, so I don't think I'm the only one.
I'd say you have been. I've had 2 as co. cars and had no real issues with either, know a few others with them who've never mentioned any probs either.

I'd be reluctant to buy any modern diesel car out of warranty... I know cars like the 535d are great but would you want to be picking up the twin-turbo-powered-repair bills in 5 years time?

I'll be glad to see the back of my mondeo's- not because they are bad but they'll remind me of queing for hours at hanger lane gyratory. 3.0 Omega next biggrin
