People arent speeding, and if they are, they are going to get tickets since there is an average speed check system in place.
It's possible to speed in the tunnel without getting triggering the cameras, though...
How? Other than covering your plate..

Aren't they average speed cameras?, speed for the first half then go really slow for the second half?.

It's only 1 mile long, and stopping/slowing ALOT can't work due to sensors for stopped vehicles alerting the dudes in the control room.

I'm going to see about a house in Hindhead tomorrow. I might be a local who enjoys a bit of aural from time to time.

I put these people in the same category as those who buy houses near airports and complain about the airplane noise, even before the tunnel what about the noise of cars and trucks going through the town and the massive tail backs

If you didn't live on the A3 itself, you wouldn't necessarily notice. Most residents of Hindhead will have supported the bypass... for use as a bypass... not as a honey-pot for juvenile driving.

Road vehicles

... It’s illegal to modify the exhaust system to make a vehicle noisier after it has been ‘type approved’ (checked it meets environmental and safety standards)...
Interesting to know, given that two of my cars do not have Type Approval.

Although the limit is 70 (most of the time - they have the facility to lower this if needed), when I drove through all the other drivers seemed to think it was 40. Gave me the chance of two or three 40 to 70 full throtle blasts without any danger of triggering the average cameras.

I think I would have more fun driving at a decent pace along the old and now presumably disused section of the A3 from Barons BMW, round the Punchbowl corner and along the twisty bits that follow. Anyone know what is happening to it? I used to love that stretch of road smile

Yep, drove past yesterday and they've got the diggers up there.

Oh no, that's a great shame. So, no more barrelling into the Punchbowl corner, forgetting it's an increasing radius corner wink

Yeah, done that a few times myself. Used to do the A3 once a week in a hire car and that was the highlight!

Why do they do that? Close the old bit of road thats being bypassed.
What happens if the tunnels are closed for some reason? Gridlock

As I understand it, if one tunnel is closed due to an incident, traffic will be diverted into the other in a contraflow system, hence the lane open/closed signs in both directions for each tunnel. At worst, that'll still be better than it used to be.

It would have to be an exceptional incident to close both tunnels at the same time.

Never been through the tunnels myself as i live nowhere near them, but i have driven past when they were being built. Id say 200mph is a slight exaggeration however especially on a 1.2 mile stretch. Can see how it would annoy the neighbours but loud doesnt always mean fast! They could be flat out in second and still only really be topping out at around 65mph :/
