So, I was all ready to post some Capri2.8 injection brochure pics(knowing how the PH massive love a hot Ford) when I see this thread has been chosen as a TOTD, Matt Bird's eye obviously being beguiled by the pretty lady in the Cortina Crusader ad. So here are more details on said machine, complete with pretty lady, unfortunately staring pensively into the distance, not sprawled on the bonnet clad in a bikini and a liberal dose of baby oil. Quite funny Ford should call it the 'Crusader': I don't think that name would go down very well in today's political climate. SlimRick, this one goes out to you!

Technically my Mum's car, but she couldn't drive.

It was identical to this one and apparently very rare being a 5 door. It got broken into and my Dad left it to rot on the driveway, before it was scrapped some years later.

I was obsessed with it as a child, used to spend a lot of time playing inside it. Feeling all nostalgic now!

A car with the distinction of being named after the last line in 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', (production even lasting till 1995 in South America) behold the Renault Fuego. If your thinking it's a cheese eating surrender monkey version of the Capri, you're right, the Fuego like the Capri even stealing its underpinnings from a saloon contemporary. Whether it starred in a TV show called 'Les Professionels' I'm not sure..........

The best car I've owned to date, the Fuego Turbo, much better than a Capri! The Garret turbo ran at 13psi!
Unfortunately it was written off (me too, nearly) by an idiot on his mobile who rear-ended me at 70 on the M4!

Wartburg, don't really remember much of it apart from it constantly changed colours as my dad got bored. Black, black and white, white, yellow and white, all yellow. He whacked in a full length sunroof from a Citroen so we could hear the glorious 2 stroke motor up ahead even more!

Then got a 1.3 Austin Allegro that's in this shot, it was awful. He then bough the Cortina that's also in this shot off my grandma:

I liked this, was a 2.0 Ghia and always remember how comfy the velour seats were.

Next was a Mini, and again it went through clutches like nobodies business and was a generally a pain. Then he got paid off by British Gas and bought this:

Coming from the mini it felt like we'd stepped into the future!
NERD ALERT
That looks more like an L or Base Cortina as it's missing the front head rests, alloy wheels, front over riders, side plastic strip and Ghia badge on the front wing.

Like the Wartburg !!

Thinking about it, my dad actually had a pretty cool list when I was growing up. From the earliest I remember :

Bronze Capri mk1
Dark blue Rover p6 3500 V8
Vauxhall Ventora
Red Mercedes 220 (W115)
Metallic grey Sierra XR4i
White Renault Alpine V6 turbo (A110 I think, the late 80s one)

My Dad carted us around in one of these back in the early 80's

Then upgraded it to a different colour laugh

He had a huge wooden box on the roof for carting stuff around, we'd regularly sit in it as he drove around the village. Loong before H&S made stuff less fun

In his youth my father had a lot of disposable income and looked a little like Bob Hope! He would often drive down to the French Riviera in some 'exotic' British sports car, like a Jowett Javelin, or his alloy bodied Jaguar XK120, and pick up an actress or two!
As a baby I would apparently burble to the sound of a Marcos' engine, as I laid on it's back shelf!
Other cars included a Hillman Imp Sport, the last British car my father owned.
At about the same time he had a very rare, bright yellow Fiat 750 Abarth, with a duck bill spoiler on the rear.
This was his 'hobby' car, so also had a 'family' car too, the first being a Peugeot 504 coupe, then a maroon Renault 4, with a mushroom growing out of the back seat!!, and finally THE SAAB 96 that was used in the UK adverts
The Abarth was then sold due to a very expensive gearbox repair bill, and he went back to owning just one car at a time.
The SAAB 96 was replaced with an orange SAAB 99 Turbo, easy to spot in the car Park!
There the followed an Audi 100 coupe, the one that later became the Quattro. I did try to convince him to get a Quattro, to no avail!
He then got a VW Corrado 16V, in red, with that cool spoiler that goes up at a whistle-blowing 70mph!

That was stolen, the police finally finding the body cut up and dumped, and was replaced with what I regarded as a rather inferior Nissan 200SX.
Happily, he replaced it with a BMW Mini Cooper, which is what every cool dad in his 80's should be driving!!
Now that he is no longer with us, perhaps he has been reunited with his past cars, or is perhaps driving his 'ultimate' car?

I took mine to the sea side yesterday, with the salty breeze on it all afternoon I expect to be sweeping it up when I next see it.

First one I remember was this, in sky blue

Then this. It died when it went sideways on some black ice, mounted a kerb, ripped the sump off on a raised drain cover, then took out a road sign and a brand new street lamp.
When the Police turned up my dad was leaning on the bonnet, nonchalantly smoking a roll up, despite the alarming smell of petrol eek

Then this, but in two-tone beige, brown. It struggled to do more than 60mph, overheated every 5 minutes, but was somehow quite loveable

Then one like this, but with dark blue stripes. Went to Denmark, Germany and France in this thumbup

Mine has never been interested in cars, and has had some awful cars in his time! Most of which I hated to be seen in and left me determined to do better with my own car history! The cars I remember are:

Austin Maestro - Brown, Manual

Renault 19 - Blue, Manual

Nissan Bluebird - Silver, Manual

Toyota Carina E Saloon - Turquoise, Manual

Toyota Carina E Hatchback - Red, Auto

Citroen Xsara Picasso - Blue, Manual

Hyundai iX-35 - Purple, Manual

Is there a more un-PH worthy history out there than that?

Running his own businesses meant that Dad had good years and bad in cars (and everything else)

When things were going well he had some great motors. He courted my Mum in his pre-war SS jag.

I was taken to my christening in his stunning series 1 E type (all time best hero dad car!)

There were a couple of Series 2 XJ6s and finally a lovely Series 3 Sovereign in the mid 80s

The Stag was gorgeous but lost a lot of oil (and money)

In leaner years there were Granadas, Zephyrs, 504 estates, 280C estates and a Maxi which he really hated.

His last fast motor was a Scorpio 24V Cosworth.

Cheers, it was bloody awful but then my dad has always had a thing for odd cars.

A mistake regards the Cortina , checked with my dad and this is an earlier photo and mentioned he had a maxi between the Allegro and then buying a Ghia off my grandparents, they must have upgraded at some point but the colour is almost exactly the same!
To be fair I was only 5 at the timesmile

Generic management company cars for my dad.
A Reg - Carlton 2300 CD
1986 (owned in spain) Granada 2.0 Ghia
G Reg Merc E230 W124 Estate
J Reg Merc E230 W124 Estate - this one had leather
M Reg Merc E280 W124 Estate - this one had leather, alloys and aircon!
R Reg Merc E300 TD W210 Estate

All automatic and all in silver

He now has a 13 reg E350 CDI estate.......no prizes for guessing what the three 'other' cars between his current E Class and the W210 were!

I was always more interested in my Grandad's cars....he owned a Ford dealer in Northern Ireland until the early 90's, so had some cool stuff changing them regularly......one's of note were (northern irish plates so i don't know the reg year).

Sierra 2.3 Ghia
Mk2 Granada 2.8 Ghia X....manual box, with lamps and a rubber rear spoiler....properly cool.
Sierra XR4x4.......many of these in various guises; he and my gran lived on a farm so i think these suited his needs nicely.
Mk3 Granada 2.9 Ghia 4x4
MK1 Mondeo 4x4 - can't remember the last time i saw one of those!

Sold up and treated himself to a Ford Maverick 2.4 GLX, then a few LX spec diesel Mondeo's

Brought a few Cossie's home over the years, but his dealer didn't sell new RS cars so they were always secondhand, as a result he always chose to sell them on rather than run them himself. As a kid I could never understand why he didn't have new Cossies in the dealer, but apparently Ford would only issue a few flagship dealers in each region with RS dealer status to keep them more exclusive.

Its fair to say my love of motors came from Grandad.
