Pull it apart. Now I've seen it, there's A LOT of work needed to turn it into a whole car again. Ideally the lump will go into the race car, the steering box into the 518i and the rest can go. Some nice E24/E28 parts on it.

I think arguments could be made that put it up there.

Would also consider the 507, E30 M3, E46 M3 CSL, E9, M1, E32 and 850CSi as high points.

To those I'd add their first high point. smile One of the very best looking cars of that era.

Some would probably argue the E39 5 series was the zenith, since it seemed to occupy the World's Best Car mantle for pretty much the entire time it was in production. I hear the M5 wasn't bad either. smile

I recall BMWs were always sold as the driver's option with the Mercedes as the more staid alternative. There wasn't a promoted difference in quality.

Just drove the A39 from Bude to Clovelly. A good way to stretch the legs of the V10. Was so good I turned around and drove back. What a road - possibly one of the best in the country with stunning views too. Anyone driven it?

Yes, maybe you're right but they both laid claim to being paragons of German engineering.

Yes, a few times. Further east, the 3358 over Exmoor is a good route too

yes

Can recommend Barnstaple to Crediton, too.

Nice!

Although probably a tad harsh on the E39.

Nah, none have the integral engineering oomph as the e34. Even the bonnet is a fking work of art.

Well said. Still weep that I sold the M5 touring. (Edit: But was getting to the point where I would have wept more keeping it)

I can second the A377 Barnstaple to Crediton Road; I grew up in Barnstaple and started driving when that road was the main and only real route into North Devon so used to know it like the back of my hand - I still have family in Exeter and Barnstaple and rather than using the A361 and M5 between them I use the A377 and try to remember the overtaking spots, the dips and blind bends and sudden short straights where a good engine can be exploited - but like all modern roads it is blighted by drivers who seem to think that 45mph is acceptable through all speed limits and that ALL overtaking is evil.

Speaking of which…

There are almost no E34 M5s for sale in Switzerland (where I live) at all. So imagine my interest when one popped up in my inbox; then imagine my crushing disinterest when it turned out to be this:

I love the e39, but cut from the same cloth it is not.
Toughy.

I'd personally put the E39/E46 as BMW's zenith. Both are cars that remain quite modern more than 15yrs after their inception; almost 20 years for the E39 in fact (!).

I agree that the E34 was built in a way that no BMW has been built since, but everything about the E39 was so damn right that I can overlook the odd cost cutting measure.

Gun to head? E39.

...notwithstanding that the price is a pisstake! 30k chf??!

This one looks a little more promising :

http://en.comparis.ch/carfinder/marktplatz/bmw/5-s...

but as you say, its slim pickings out here. Might be worth importing one from Germany if you can be bothered?

It's a right faff to do and the resale will be impacted as it won't be a Swiss car but the choice will be better. Have a look on Mobile.de or autoscout24.de - if you buy from a dealer in Germany you may be able to purchase with the VAT already removed, which will save some hassle, and cost.
