You could presumably remap the M3 to make it 'crush' the remapped VW, too. All pointless willy waiving nonsense.

Once you start modifying cars, you should only compare them to other modified cars that are aiming at the same thing.
At the risk of being called a troll... I don’t think a remap will do much to the new M3 if all you care about is 0-60.

0-60 is mostly about traction at this point and the M3 has traction issues all the way up to third gear while the Golf R chirps off the line and that’s it.

A few fanboys on this thread, the Golf R has 197bhp/tonne out of the box and is the same to 62 as a diesel 3 series estate.

Comparing it to the new M3/4 is laughable, a car that hits 100mph in less than 9 secs to 100 (stock) with over 260hp/tonne.

Any turbo car can be chipped and fettled.

Oh and Lamboman100 = Vladimir, AICMFP.

How can you use the term "rally geeks" to justify your own delusion that these cars are not comparable? You also cherry pick figures!

60-100 MK7 Golf R takes 7.7
60-100 MK2 Cupra R takes 7.8
60-100 Mk2 Focus RS 500 takes 6.4 seconds ffs!!

All figures taken from fastestlaps.

It seems that making a hatchback 4wd is revolutionary in your eyes.
The Golf 7 R appears to be so revolutionary it's a whole 0.5 seconds faster 60-100 than a 10 year old 130i. That's a massive step up, I mean a whole half a second, with all the extra turbos and fake 4wd shenanigans. VW must be proud.

I think the most amazing thing is that the 1-Series is now 10 years old...where did that time go?

That just reminded me about a recent hatchback that had a lot of hype around it last year :P Which is priced similar to the Golf and incidentally is quite a lot faster.

BMW M135i vs Golf R
0-60 4.5 vs 4.7
60-100 6.4 vs 7.7

It remaps just as easily and is as good on fuel with proven reliability.

The only possible argument is that the Golf is 4wd... The BMW also comes in an xdrive version wink (although I'm not sure if you can get them in the UK)

funnily enough I was coming back to post about the M135i - so VW have moved the game on to be slower than the competition from a year ago. Damn they're good at this smile

The M135i is hard to look beyond if you want a fast turbo hatchback (at least down south where it barely ever snows and AWD is pointless except for 0-60 times).

If you want a Focus / Golf-sized performance hatch that isn't FWD / FWD-based, the 1-Series is now the ONLY choice (the Impreza hatch now only comes with a 1.6). Shame we don't get the option of AWD in RHD markets though....not that you need it.

True. FWD doesn't really bother me in a hatch. I certainly prefer FWD to AWD because, although FWD imposes a practical limit on the power that can sensibly be used, I wouldn't want more power than about 200bhp in a hatch anyway. It's the turbo 4 pot that puts me off.

The only hot hatch that I can actually get remotely excited about is the R32.

Well said. Somebody who actually puts their hands up and tells it as it is. A sizeable % of PHers, certainly those who have seen or replied to this and similar threads, always have such fripperies as 0-60 or 0-100 times etc in the back of their mind. Those shouting its willy waving are only fooling one person. Themselves. I think its probably more about vw golf r haters wanting to poo poo the thread via any distraction they can muster such as fake 4wd systems, 0.5sec improvements in 10 years over a 135i or whatever or in this case the willy waving.thats just a moral high ground cop out.if i was a betting man i reckon the willy waving performance figures means more to the haters than those who openly discuss them.

Classic PH:-

A: I don't like the Golf R much. Not a fan of turbo 4 pots or AWD.

B: You're scared of its supercar credentials!!!

A: Um. No. I just don't like it much. I can see why others do, but it's not for me.

B: Willy waver!!!!

Because the 6 cyl engine is more important to me than the driven wheels. Once you go AWD, having more than 200bhp is fine (but not something I want per se...I just wont turn down extra power).

Fanboi perhaps?

You hadn`t notice a particularly fast hatchback until this car really?
Nah, just recognize and acknowledge when the game is changing.

Everyday shopping trolleys are entering a new era of fast speeds and turbos.

No longer the preserve of six-figure cars or rally geeks.
But you said the new Golf has "ushered in the superhatch era".

Really are you saying no car was there before it? Howsabout the impreza STI hatch doing the same thing years ago? Did that not "usher in an era"? or perhaps the Lancia Delta Integrale and Escort Cosworth etc did it 20 years ago?

Saying the Golf has somehow ushered in an era that these cars have been representing for years just seems like fanboyism unless you just forgot that others have been around a long time.

Rally geeks? Really? This is a petrolhead site.

So how is "the game changing" as you put it?

Eh? Most of the willy waving is done by Golf R fanbois with all their "tuned" figures.

Indeed, even VAG themselves have been doing it, exact same formula in the fifteen year-old S3.

laugh

And the fez is out of sight in the faster sections. What a surprise?!? Lots of visible understeer from the golf. Who would have guessed the results between a 300hp shopping cart and a modern f car round the turdburg ring? Hunting down my arse.

Imprezas, Integrales and Cosworths are great cars, but they are for rally geeks and chavsters.

The Golf R can be driven by everyone, from chavs to millionaires.

And to look at the bigger picture -- the Golf R is step 1... step 2 is the R400 and AMG A45 "Black Series"... both of which will soon be M3- and 911-killers at lower prices.

The Golf R is selling in much bigger volumes than VW expected (currently up to 6 months' wait for a new one, which is long, by VW and other standards)... Once the other major car makers get wind of the R's popularity, they are going to join the race to build the best superhatch -- the Ford ST and RS models, for example, are already starting to look a little slow and dated by comparison (a second or more slower to 60mph).
