Ah yes sorry, we'd drifted off topic rather during all the general talk about hybrids. We were talking about CVTs, nothing to do with batteries at all.

In the case of range-extender hybrids, surely you use bloody great capacitors to smooth out the load on the batteries? I just really dislike the idea of having an engine that should be capable of 40%ish efficiency, and fundamentally limiting it to about 20% by connecting it to the wheels.

Thats why you use an Atkinson cycle engine where engine transients dont matter wink Im okay with that idea.... I even worked on building one wink VERY EXPENSIVE material costs though while volumes are so low. However its not appropriate for your hyper performance products IMO.

Don't many mild hybrids already use Atkinson cycle engines for this very reason? I thought they were pretty mainstream these days.

Mainly full Hybrids, so you could be in the region of 35% efficiency at some loads.

NSX will be interesting but Jaguar CX75 should be to market with a HyperHybrid before Honda are.

Yes. Honda futuristic how it should be, unlike the newer shape CTR.
