As a rarer colour, that may be less prone to rust. Could be a bit cheaper in that colour scheme though.http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C685524
You could easily need more on a 124, or even an E39 TBH (mine needed a lot of work to one sill).

So chaps, with all the Mercedes love in here does anybody have any experiences of W220/C215 Mercedes?
I know the smaller Mercedes from this era get a bad rep, do the larger ones turn to rust/fall apart/become a electrical fire risk?. I've personally come across a couple of jammed shifters but that's a common issue. I do seem to see a fair few around suffering from ABC problems but from my own research that seems to be more to do with neglect/poor maintenance than inherit design flaws.
CL500s seem to represent fantastic value

£2995!
Or the slightly more mad, but oh some tempting prospect of a V12 and Twin Turbos for £5k if you're willing to put up with more doors...

I remember years ago watching Quentin Wilson on Top Gear or fifth gear reviewing the E36 M3 as a used buy. One phrase that always stuck with me is the moment a car goes 'white sock' which is essentially the moment a car falls in price enough to be afforded by people who ordinarily would not be able to run such a motor. Having strapped themselves up on finance they are then unwilling or unable to maintain the vehicle correctly.I know the smaller Mercedes from this era get a bad rep, do the larger ones turn to rust/fall apart/become a electrical fire risk?. A 100k car will always require 100k car maintenance whether or not you pay 100k or 3k for it.
The trick is to try and avoid a car that's been 'white socked' and get one that's been owned from new by a retired cotswold vet who has lavished it with a full mdsh

Re the E55 posted, those headlamps are knackered - they may respond to a sand, mop and polish - otherwise you're looking at £200 for a pair of OE Hellas and the bumper needs dropping to fit.
Shiiid.
Seems like the w202 secret is out there now, and it got leaked before I've managed to get a nice one at a good price!
I love them. Has to be an early one for me with the amber indicators. There's one in our village, and I love parking my 190 right next to it - you can definitely see its genesis in mine.

Pretty sure you only need to drop the bumper of the facelifts for a headlamp change, but yes those headlamps need attention.0a said:

That is so lush. Such a shame there's so many silver cars out there.http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C685524
This looks nice for £795 - I know it's under-budget but I know you chaps appreciate a 190!
Excuse the rubbish small pictures, I had to screenshot on my phone as it wouldn't let me save them!

The slightly newer cars arent much better. I've just got my S203 AMG back from the bodyshop having had both front wings and both rear arches replaced..... looks good now though. Will be gutted when I sell!

I agree, it looks well worth investigation at that money. No worries about things being under budget if they are apparently solid and viable cars of a character appropriate to the thread. It would soon be in budget range with a bit of fixer-upper activity anyway.Max M4X WW said:

Darker colours seem to complement the CL shape best. I've been looking at CLs for years but was dismayed to find that the early ones, at least, aren't shy about rusting in certain places. If you add that to their ability to throw up massive bills with their ABC and other systems then these aren't a good prospect for a happy relationship.
I've just bought an SL which shares the same complex systems and have been dealt a hefty blow in the wallet already by the ABC - 45,000mls and FMBSH!

I have to refute this, as I think it's unnecessary scare-mongering for those yet to take the plunge.I have nary a pot in which to pee. I'm so poor I get a christmas tip from the mice. Yet for years and years (and years) I've run a fleet of luxury-ish bangers with cumulative new prices well into 6 figures.
My cars cost me a few hundred a year. Honestly. Just a few hundred.
Sometime spending is required. But scale of said spending is almost always optional - the necessary is very little, and sprucing-up is entirely voluntary (and often futile).
Second-hand parts, Eurocarparts, GSF, and a willingness to scuff one's knuckles and learn a bit will get you through.
Tossing keys at 'The Man' is an exciting luxury of which I'm very envious, but it's absolutely not part and parcel of the game.
Just jump in, the water's tepid.
