There are advantages in being old. You pay less insurance, have had longer to save up for what you want, more experience to make in informed choice and don’t care about what younger people think about your image. (This was helpful when, after 250 non stop miles in my Lotus Exige, I was reduced to crawling out of it on all fours at the petrol station.) 66.

Sorry if this point has been made before, but life is too short to read the whole of this thread...😊.

As the antithesis of the "Young people and sensible boring saloons" thread, I thought I'd start this.

Do you know of anyone who drives a modern car that's "too young" for them? I'm 45 and would drive something like a Sunbeam Lotus or 205 GTI as I grew up in the hot hatch era and that's OK. However, I wouldn't buy a new Focus RS or Honda Type R as I believe I'd feel foolish in it. A bit like wearing skinny jeans or a baseball cap.

Am I doing this right?
I'm 50 in 6 months and drive a Focus RS. I don't see a problem, plus my insurance is about £200.

Please could people aged 30-60 stop posting on this thread. You're actually not old smile

I don't think I'm old at 65 but until recently drove a 500bhp/tonne competition Caterham but now (mostly) bimble around in a 500bhp Jaguar XFR.
Good man !
Quite right! I'll be 70 soon and I'm enjoying driving more than ever before, either in my A8 or Riley. Being older doesn't mean we all automatically lose our lust for speed.

Having lived through and driven through the proper hot hatch era, Renault 5 Turbo, Alfasud 1.5Ti, Astra GTE MK 1+2, Fiat Uno Turbo, XR2 + 3 various marks, Nova GTE, Peugeot 205 1.6 + 1.9, are just a few I drove, owned or stole (kidding on the stole) or recovered I can say in all honesty I now want a car that I can get into without hurting my back, a quiet car so I can listen to the radio and one that if I hit a wall or car would offer reasonable protection all round for the kids. But there are times when I have that 1000 years stare and think how fun those times were, no speed cameras and only an outside risk a police car could keep up.

The first ever mk5 Golf GTI I saw was being driven by a lady of between 75-85. There's also a M2 locally that's owned by a similar person.
I've often noticed quite a high proportion of Golf GTIs, usually mk5s, driven by 65+ ladies.

And another. 56 and new focus RS Edition in blue. Great hot hatch. Only raced it twice on track... So far.

Similar, just turned 50 and expecting a new Megane 280 Cup to replace a 275 in September. Will be tracking it too but won't probably "race" it as not exactly allowed on a track day wink

Getting our first EV next week, and viewing that as taking me back to my days of the Alfasud, XR2, Colt Turbo (awesome motor!), XR3i.....only with quicker acceleration!!

Mid-50s, so not properly old, but looking forward to it.
Also looking forward to not having to visit another petrol station (mostly charging at home!). Benefits of age include owning solar panels...so some genuinely free fuel as a bonus!

Whenever I see an older bloke in something like a Focus RS, Type R, RS Megane etc I always just think 'Good Lad'! They could have gone with a more discrete Golf R or S3 but no, they've thought fk what people think I'm driving what I want!

Father in Law is 70 and owns a few hot hatches: Clio V6, 205 GTi, Clio Williams, Golf Clubsport S and an Escort Cosworth amongst other stuff. He’s a grumpy old git, but still young at heart I guess.

Also just had the back boxes on his V10 M5 modded for more noise laugh

RS Megane is hardly as flamboyant as the former two let's be honest tongue out

True, especially the 5 door current one. Only one exhaust pipe too and zero spoilers. Mine will be white on 18', practically invisible in the care home's car park.

I think they look ridiculous irrespective of driver age but I am glad they exist.

All Alzheimer Aces please report to the Drivers' Briefing. For those not participating in the Geriatric Grand Prix there is Bingo or Crib as usual.
