Presumably there's a reason? we cant afford the war, the current level of benefits (or past given the amount of money that was spunked up the wall in tax credits) or maybe it all gets redirected into government projects and from there I couldn't possible comment?

Is there a dummy's guide to show the collection and distribution of tax?
They collect it from decent people who work, and distribute it to the feckless failures who become dependent on benefit, and who vote the c'nts back in.

Simple.

Actually that's not strictly true. It will affect every car that has been through full type approval, anything that went through low volume type approval, such as TVR's, Caterhams, Westfields, etc will escape.
Is this the same for imports? I'm thinking of Jap imports specifically.
Yes, because they haven't been through full european type approval, whichis where the CO2 is measured and set.
Hmmm, time for a spec c Impreza then!

Will this spawn a bigger aftermarket market? With cars being sold with low power and emissions as standard but then easily and frequenty modified to be proper speed and proper emissions, while avoiding the VED bashing?

This is depressing:

Over half of adults on benefits in 60 neighbourhoods of Britain

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/art...

Oh, and to add an extra few degrees to the bladder, it mentions this:

article said:
The mother of Scarlett Keeling, the Devon teenager found murdered on an Indian beach, has described how she saved more than £7,000 from child and other benefits to pay for the holiday that ended in tragedy.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Fiona MacKeown said she had saved £200 per week from benefits and other sources of income for nine months.

She also revealed that Scarlett was left in Goa without money for food or accommodation, which was provided by a 25-year-old tour operator that she later discovered was having a sexual relationship with her daughter.

Yes, it is here as a PDF:
2008 Budget Report via the BBC

look for the big PIE charts - the figures are absolutely stunning.
This includes the VAT and NI taxes (equal) and Income Tax (higher), and the £31billion interest bill for this year.

Don't forget, £31billion interest - if we/they borrowed £0 this year.. a sobering reflection of the current dent level - quite a chunk of the Pie Chart too.

So when we stump up all this extra money for the carbon emissions that the cars put out, what are the gummint going to spend it on??

Surely they HAVE to put it towards carbon offsetting schemes???

Perhaps an FOIA request to the treasury would illicit the TRUTH??
But then again, perhaps not.

Thanks Vesuvius, I'm looking to buy a 330 shortly, so I should be looking for one first registered between 1st June 2000 to 1st March 2001. That way the tax will remain cheaper?

I may have missed this said already, sorry if I have, but if this means everyone is effeectively 'forced' into a diesel and the price between petrol and diesel is widening. Plus they can't make enough diesel as it is anyway so it is highly likely the price will keep increasin at a greater rate than petrol. Will there come a point when diesel is so much more expensive than petrol that £210 a year extra on VED (due to higher emissions) is more than made up for by cheaper fuel bills?

(Am I even making sense?)

Yes it will remain cheaper, BUT

Going for one pre March 2001 will mean you cant buy a 330Ci Sport, as they are all newer than that. You'll be stuck with just the 330Ci with no specific trim level. These are not as nice.

Also worth bearing in mind that the extra ~£200 a year of tax will also pale into insignificance next to a ~£2500 fuel bill if you do 10k+ a year in the beemer.

I'm currently looking for a new motor, and before this came out, I wanted a Civic Type R. I seriously began to wonder if it was such a clever idea. But over the 3 year life of the car the extra tax is a tiny amount compared to what I will pay in fuel.

And whilst the hunt for the civic is on-going, it is the fuel prices which have now got me wondering...

So all hot hatches are now in the min £300p.a. VED banding with some £445.... surely thats going to push many out of these sors of cars into slightly less powerful so you end up with 9/10ths the fun for a lot less tax
