Classic (old, retro) cars for sale £0-5k

Woody, The 9-3 looks very good for the money. I would seriously recommend fitting a steering rack brace, 4 point chassis brace and doubling up the rear ARB.
The steering brace will save you from getting cracks, and the rear ARB is only about £10.
The 4 point brace is a bit more expensive, but makes a massive difference in my opinion. http://shop.speedparts.se/en/prod/9-3-98-02/suspen...
I really like the look of that MX5, but think I would remove all the lotus badges.

The Lotus/MX5 - I love it. I'll call it a tribute rather than a copy

I suspect that a 2.8 litre straight six with a carburettor will be well down on performance and significantly less good to drive than the 3.5 though. Still, it is a lovely looking car to potter around in.

I've seen that MX5 'Sprint' on the road and it looks rather good actually.
My head tells me to hate it but I just can't! dbdb said:
I have only ever driven the V8 version with a 3.5 litre (fuel injected?) engine. That was a marvellous old thing - fully boat like and as you say very old fashioned, but dripping with charisma and boat-like feel apart, good road manners. It still had the ability to be fully useable for distance driving and fast on the motorway. The one I drove (my uncles) had a very high spec too, with electric windows all round, air conditioning and leather seats.

I must confess I have driven the car in question and it wasn't painfully slow. 140bhp and 169lb ft which comes in very smoothly and fairly low down in the rev range so doesn't need to be pushed to keep up with traffic. I think the 3.5 has 200bhp.I suspect that a 2.8 litre straight six with a carburettor will be well down on performance and significantly less good to drive than the 3.5 though. Apart from the wonderful character of the car I was blown away by how relatively modern it felt on the road. It certainly didn't feel like a car that was designed well over half a century ago.
Just wish I had more space on the drive!
