Because the law says so. That is the law. You could equally argue why wear a seat belt? Or use indicators? Because it is a legal requirement. It is not a defence to ignore the law because you disagree with that law. It's just reading some posts on this thread from users getting really upset that someone has removed a space from their numberplate!
