E38's are very, very refined....bought the game on for BMWs, having been in E34s and E32s the E38 was a pretty colossal step up. The E65 is another step up again but the difference in generations certainly isn't as much...not by a long way. They're brilliant cars and the 728i really can return half decent economy if you want it to.
Yes Ross. I really didn't want the pain of the V8 (or especially a V12) at the petrol pump in a car that's going to used rather than just being a pure Garage Queen. I know the reality probably isn't a huge difference between this and a 740i if driven sensibly and that the 740i is much faster but I'd just have that (probably irrational) 'niggle' in the back of my mind every time I'm putting fuel in.

(p.s I haven't quite clarified with Mrs D yet as to which car is [i]exactly[i/] who's just yet in terms of this and the 124 E320 Estate laugh)

Another at a bit less and lower miles and 'Sport'?

That's better, nice find. Colours make it look like a modern car. Would still crave a few extra cylinders thought if it were me.
Might have to kick Mrs D's ageing E39 into touch, then bung her the 124 E320 Estate as (significant) compensation and go have a sniff around that maybe?
You see! This is why I hate this flipping thread!!!

Just bought it!

Went to see it this morning and it's so nice and spotlessly clean (and looked so good parked in the garage next to the vendor's silver R129 SL320 with only 28K miles on the clock) that I just couldn't resist it.

As a final check, I got underneath it with a flash light to check for the fuel tank issue, which I thoroughly researched last night, almost hoping that I'd find a problem that would then make the decision for me to walk away. It was absolutely pristine under there...not even a hint of corrosion!

Just back home with it now.
Well done! Can you really blame the thread however, given that you posted it here in the first place!?

I bet they all just clip off?

But whilst you're at it, why not just leave then in-situ and get a nice Carbon Wrap Effect to stick over your wood trim instead? Scroll down the page! yikes

Brilliant. Just the look I was after, thanks.

No, no, no. But I bet people buy that st.
Given that there are 54 already sold and a further 41 Watchers they seem to be popular? But don't worry just yet as there are more than 10 still available!

There again...Xmas isn't far away! I can just see that lovely glow of happiness on your face, as you open your 'special present' on Xmas morning. All nice and sparkly!

Cheers Guys!!! thumbup

Those pics in the ad really don't do it justice at all.

It drives superbly. Just done about 50 miles bringing it home...bullet straight even with no hands on the wheel with not a hint of shimmy or wobble. I'd forgotten just how refined these E38s are.

(And the best surprise so far is...I didn't know that on these late ones the door handles illuminate inside and outside!)

It's been a busy weekend for E38 purchaes then, I picked up my 750i on Sat. Done 250 miles in it this weekend. At 20mpg.

Few little niggles with it, CD Changer not working, wheels need a refurb and a couple of little dents to be popped out, rear blind not working, one folding mirror not working, other than that it seems all good. I like having a few little jobs to put right!

Has had the newer digital climate control put in since pic above, and mk4 sat nav

Congratulations on the 7 Derin: I had a feeling you needed cheering up with a new toy. Keep us informed. If I had any brains I'd get one for my commute instead of the diseasel.

That's the 750i that was up on bmw5 isn't it?

What's the V12 like?

Outrageous value. It's one of those cars you'd want to just buy so you can say you've had a V12.

I believe the 728 is relatively economical, which is what attracts me to this model. My w124 does a predictable 25mpg - ragging it around the highlands produced 24.9, and wasting my time going at 60 on the motorway produced 27! These mechanically injected cars don't seem bothered about what kind of driving you do.

The Audi annoyed me at sub 20 mpg on my regular commute, it doesn't sound like much of a difference but I seemed to be endlessly putting £100 of petrol in the thing. I think my mental mpg limit for a daily is 25 so as to not really worry about using petrol.

The scary thing was down driving and making v8 noise - it seems the lower end consumption of a v8 is 12 for a full tank!

I've done two 90 mile round trips in the A8 today (D3 4.2). Stuck to the speed limits (well, 80 on the dual carriageways) and got 24.9MPG. No fun to be had, but some days I just feel like taking it easy! If I drove like that most of the time, the V8 would be utterly pointless and I may as well have the 3.0TDI version, which would probably do nigh on 40MPG in similar use.

I agree. The issue I had was that I'd get to 24mpg on the computer, enjoy the v8 briefly then be back down at 20. Use of v8 required much more time in careful pootling to end up with a good average!

Smooth, powerful and has a lovely tone. A bit thirsty too. with 350 lb ft torque there really is power available all the time. Can be a very fast car if required. Engine also used in Rolls Royce Silver Seraph.

That really does look like a fantastic buy, the type of car that will cease to exist in a few years (do BMW even do a v12 7 or are they v8 turbos now?).

I'd love to know how the car is to hustle along a nice wide Scottish A road, I bet it's amusing!

Thank you!

You should keep the diesel for fully-laden family trips and get an E38 as your business wheels?

I'd love to know what that V12 feels like compared to the V8 in my 745i.... 326bhp vs 333bhp, 350lb ft vs 332lb ft.

Suspect mine revs much more happily but not QUITE as quick low down, but 5 speed vs 6 speed would probably mean the V8 would have the legs.....but it ain't no 12!!! I don't think I could put up with much worse consumption than I'm getting in the 745i to be honest. It CAN get 30mpg on my commute when the traffic is clear, i've done it; but what's the point in having a V8 if you don't use it. I think with a V12 I'd be forever worrying about teen-mpg. Unless it was a 2nd car....hmmm

Well done on the purchase, just hope it goes all well for you!

yesWhich is why mine has averaged 19.5 over the last 22 months and 45k miles. If you're going to have one, you might as well use it as intended, or there really is no point and you may as well have the more frugal version.

Is 25mpg realistic on your 7? The hopeful part of my brain says technology has moved on so surely a later BMW v8 should be as good as earlier straight 6s... Is it just hope though?!
