Weve done this already in another thread. If you were a car or truck driver or another cyclist youd have just let the car through. It had already started its manoeuvre, you can see what it needs to do. Its common courtesy to nod it through in case youre in the same boat one day.
The cyclist has got priority wrong and who should give way to who wrong too and his argument about who should read the highway code
But dont let it stop a good argument spin

Yeah, when has training ever helped anyone with anything before!
I might be wrong, but I've never heard of anyone riding a bike without training, without being taught how to.

Incidentally, what training have you done as a pedestrian?
There have been numerous schemes involving haulage firms and the police which allow riders to sit inside HGV cabs etc (there are videos and data to back this up before certain users on her get all angry and want proof). Almost all riders will have been shocked at how little can be seen at specific times from a cab and almost all will have undoubtedly taken a great deal from the experience. Your above comments, I'm sorry to say, are quite desperate and at the same time, rather depressing. What exactly are you trying to defend? I want safer cyclists, yet you don't seem to agree.

Tell me again why some form of even basic training and advise on clothing, iPod removal, road positioning etc would be a bad idea ?

Just to let you know Digby - as a militant cyclist - your view has enlightened me as to "the other side".
I think you have a very fair point.

As with most things there is a rule of diminishing returns. Once you have given an HGV every mirror, flashing light and warning sound - and once you have trained up the drivers to a very high level - you need to consider whether MORE training just isn't particularly effective whereas promoting the FREE bike training (which I have done and is excellent: 20 laps of Hyde Park Corner roundabout teaches you a lot about road position!) and more media coverage on how to protect YOURSELF as a cyclist can look like a much better return on investment.

I'm sure we already have that. I'm sure it wouldn't take more than a few moments on Google to arrange all the training one could wish.

Makes you wonder why several million tourists flock there every year making it one of the worlds most popular destinations, doesn't it? Perhaps they should knock down all that attracts them and make a super, super, SUPER cycle lane.
This has to go down as one of the stupidest comments I've read today.

I mean are you really that stupid?

Have you ever been a tourist in London?

You could get rid of all private cars in London and just allow goods vehicles, buses and taxis in. This would reduce traffic and so make more space for bicycles. An the impact on tourism? the square root of fk all. I mean absolutely fk all.

Tourists in London use public transport because unlike many of the people who live and work there, they're not fking morons obsessed with sitting in a metal box and getting angry about cyclists.

In fact reducing traffic and hence pollution would probably make it a nicer place to visit.

Does anyone else just click on any thread with "cycle" or "cycling" or "cyclist" in the title on the front page just for giggles?

I don't think anything Digby has said is unreasonable. All sounds pretty sensible to me. I reckon locally about 35-40% of cyclists are twazzocks (or "pedestrians on bikes" if you prefer). I assume the reason they think the stuff they do is OK is basic ignorance, which training would help with.

Training on both sides can only help the situation, it certainly won't make it worse. It's pretty obvious to be honest.

Try being better, or apply to be the Queen. It's amazing how I don't struggle but some seem to struggle daily?

Explain how I can be better. How, for example, do I keep track of twenty plus cyclists in seven mirrors, the images in which change every second meaning there is no chance to check them all and be certain the situations reflected in them will have remained the same. How do I be better when those twenty plus cyclists will vary from those topping 30 mph, to those sitting perfectly still in a blind spot somewhere around my near 40 foot length? How do I make better all the implemented cycle friendly additions to my vehicle which are often completely ignored? Tell me.

Maybe even more training would help? Maybe more lights, more audible warnings, proximity alarms and stickers. Maybe even more mirrors, more safety inspections, more laws passed to allow us to operate. Perhaps more vosa checks and more courses dedicated to city driving and the influx of cyclists? How about more refresher courses and CPC's without which you can no longer drive.

Alternatively, leave it the way things are and wait for the next bit of sickening news.

Corrected your precis for you.
Of course all tourists take a car on a city break don't they? No-one drives in London because they like sitting in a metal box. They do it because they have to or there aren't viable alternatives.

7/10 it was fairly stupid but a bit meh.
