I'll be with my dad today in his X5 M50d. Similar thing and that shifts too.

He is 69.
Not quite sure a diesel X5 qualifies as a hot hatch... as nice as it may be

bit funny one this as you have Arthur on you tube who used to drive a 600bhp Golf R-nobody thought he was tragic i fact everyone on the channel thought he was cool so I dont get this whole thing suggesting you can be too old to drive a hot (or super) hatch. bks to the naysayers. you drive what you want - anyone with issues - thats their problem not yours.

As the antithesis of the "Young people and sensible boring saloons" thread, I thought I'd start this.

Do you know of anyone who drives a modern car that's "too young" for them? I'm 45 and would drive something like a Sunbeam Lotus or 205 GTI as I grew up in the hot hatch era and that's OK. However, I wouldn't buy a new Focus RS or Honda Type R as I believe I'd feel foolish in it. A bit like wearing skinny jeans or a baseball cap.

Am I doing this right?
I am in my end of life crisis - age 77 - so am driving a BMW Z4. Who really cares what people think

Well now, to put all this in some perspective I'm 68. My last car was an Alfa 156 2.5 V6 but in the end it needed more welding than I could be bothered to do (and I do a LOT of welding!) so I looked for a new car car. Last month I bought a Honda Civic Type R (FN2) and it is a peach of a car! When the opportunity arises to wind it up to 8.000 rpm or so it's magnificent and you just want to do it up through all the gears. Which would, of course, be too naughty to even consider.
So, age and cars, or even age and everyday life, look I've known/still know plenty of people who were middle aged at 25 and I've known some who could scare the absolute f### out of you at 80. Pick which way you want to go. As an aside the one of the most entertaining ladies I've ever known once (in a quiet corner at a party) offered me a blow job. At the time she was 78 and I was 43. I have to admit I politely turned the offer down but what a girl!

My daily is a Leon Cupra, I'm 44.

My mum bought herself a new Mini Cooper a few months ago, she's 77 this year. It's quite a cool thing as her first car was an original Mini Cooper when she was 18 and as this will be her last car she'll have topped and tailed her driving career with Minis

Age is as said just a number. I don't feel any different at fast heading towards 70 to when I was in my 20s, I was just a smaller number then! The only time I realise I'm older is not the aches and pains, I had them too when I was younger, it's when you look in the mirror!

The thing I love about driving these days (JCW, so it's a 'hatch' but not 'back') is there are more dicks on the road than in all my life, so it keeps my concentration levels/attention span 'full on', keeps you feeling young (even if you're not) and that handy acceleration is needed to get away from some. Is it just me or are there more tailgaters today than ever before? Why the fk do they do it? - I swear sometimes I can see what colour eyes they have!

As for entertaining ladies, I met one once... I didn't let her go hence she's been with me for 45 years!
Trouble is she still looks a million dollars whereas I haven't aged so well. We had the builders in last year and one of the cheeky so and so's spotted a framed wedding pic of us - young sod sidled up real close to my misses and said, 'Bloody hell, you've got some gall haven't you, having a photo of you and your first husband on display.'

I'm 60 and my daily on the Oregon coast is a tuned 2016 Fiesta ST with Bilstein coilovers and a Quaife LSD.

Life is good!

My old man's 68 and has an '07 MINI Cooper in red with white roof, wheels and stripes. His previous Cooper was boggo-spec silver. He had a One before that, also silver, but got out of that after two years when he realised he'd made a bit of a mistake.

As he figured this was potentially his last car, he went all out with the colour scheme.

He's mostly had hot hatches - he replaced his SAAB 99 EMS with a Nova SR in the 80s - my mates' Dads were all driving sensible family motors! - replaced that with a Corsa SRi in '94, went a bit sleepery with a 3dr Polo 1.6 GL in '97, but got back on track when he wrote that off and there was a good deal on the Fiesta Zetec - he would've been 48.

I was 21 when he got the Fiesta so it was probably more suited to me! Though I almost didn't get to drive it - I was a named driver on Mum's cars, but never Dad's pride and joy. When the salesman at the Ford dealer asked who he wanted to be named on the free year's insurance he wasn't keen when Mum pointed out I was eligible!

46 and a delta. I've had delta's since I was 18. They are like your favourite old trainers, they just feel right. My wife recently bought a golf mk2. 80s, 90s hatches are what I grew up with and feel at home with.

Would an old bloke in an RS2 upset you more or less?

laugh

It's been gone for a while but now that I'm retired I'm hoping to have an RS4 before too long.

Would that be okay? Fit in with your plans?

hehe

You'll be old soon enough.
