I've had both a 3.0si Coupe and a Z4M Roadster. I can tell you now that the Z4M isn't worth the extra money over the 3.0si.
Such a useful informative post. Oh and you're wrong.Saying that everyone knows coupes are better anyway .

It's like a good friend of mine said who has had plenty of M and non M BMWs in the past. "the best way to look at it as a petrol head is, how would you feel when you pulled up at the lights next to the more powerful M model?"

You have to feel pretty small to take that view in the first place. There will always be someone with a better car."the best way to look at it as a petrol head is, how would you feel when you pulled up at the lights next to the more powerful M model?"

Really?I've had both a 3.0si Coupe and a Z4M Coupe and the M is better in every way other than financially. The M goes better, stops better, handles better, sounds better, looks better and feels better.

Dammit, why did you bring THAT argument up..."the best way to look at it as a petrol head is, how would you feel when you pulled up at the lights next to the more powerful M model?"
My wallet will not thank you.

Saying that everyone knows coupes are better anyway .
I can expand if you would like, but I didn't feel like posting an essay. It was merely a quick 'the 3.0si is the better car in my opinion'.Saying that everyone knows coupes are better anyway .
The Coupe is also, as you say, infinitely better.

Remember also that the difference is not just the engine: with the M you get the quicker steering rack, hydraulic power steering rather than electric, "M Diff" LSD, less intrusive stability control, wider front track..."the best way to look at it as a petrol head is, how would you feel when you pulled up at the lights next to the more powerful M model?"

It entirely depends on your type of driving. I felt the 3.0si was a far better all-rounder, and as you say, was a lot cheaper to run.I've had both a 3.0si Coupe and a Z4M Coupe and the M is better in every way other than financially. And not a better all rounder. The M was as accomplished a daily driver as the 3.0, and a way better car on the occasions when one is able to get the hammer down.

...in your opinion. I agree that some people will think that, and some people will feel the 3.0si is the better car.And not a better all rounder. The M was as accomplished a daily driver as the 3.0, and a way better car on the occasions when one is able to get the hammer down.

Yes please expand, would it be fair to say that the running costs and fear that something may go bang is pushing you in this direction. I mean you've had some strange posts since buying that particular car and its modded is it not? How many miles have you actually done in it?Pulse said:

I've already sold it, though not because I didn't like the car.Running costs are definitely a big factor in comparing the two cars; though this depends how many miles you cover per year.
I found for my driving, I was never able to fully use the power on offer. I also felt the peak torque was reached too far up the rev range.
When the car was cold, and you just wanted to take a short trip to the shops, it simply wasn't the 'comfortable' car that the 3.0si was. It was rough running, and not as accomplished as an every day car.

But I'm not sure many of us on PH choose our cars based on which is the easiest to pop to the shop in...
For me, I think I'll stick to my criteria above as a better way of comparing the two.
I agree, it likely isn't the highest of priorities for a lot of people on here, but you must have noticed the vast amount of threads in recent times about the cost of running cars? If you consider the two cars simply in terms of how much they cost to run, you have to question if the M is worth the extra running costs or not, when comparing it directly with such a fantastic car as the 3.0si.For me, I think I'll stick to my criteria above as a better way of comparing the two.
For each, they were my only car, so I needed something that didn't feel like utter crap to drive when it was cold; which the M did.

My last car was an e90, the Z4M is just as easy to "pop to the shops" in.Running costs are definitely a big factor in comparing the two cars; though this depends how many miles you cover per year.

Rough running? Really?
