RE: Jaguar's heritage museum to close...
Discussion
This is very sad news for all Jaguar enthusiasts around the world. It will mean that Jaguar is the only prestige car manufacturer not to recognise it's heritage through a unique museum where the public are able to interact with Jaguars illustrious history. You will note from the press release that Jaguar is planning to support high profile events. Sadly this will surround very few cars, mainly the more famous such as the C, & D types, XJ13, XJR13 and the XJ220. The Heritage collection is approaching 200 cars, most of which are in storage, these deserve to be viewed and appreciated by enthusiasts and public alike. In my opinion, Jaguar have a golden opportunity here to undertake to build a museum that rivals BMW, Mercedes, Porsche or Ferrari. It has been suggested that this could be completed at Gayden. With everyone's support, hopefully we can encourage Jaguar to do the right thing and build a facility for future generations to be able to appreciate all that has made Jaguar great. I am running a Facebook page with lots of content and comments surrounding this topic, including film footage of other manufacturers museums, you can copy and paste the link below to view....

Shame. Coventry should surely be the location of any heritage museum as recognition of how important that base was for Jaguar. I think Tata will be sympathetic to any additional funds required as they have been fantastic thus far in supporting the growth of JLR. After all, heritage is why people in the emerging markets lap up British/German cars, its because of their history and origins that give them the prestige which is so attractive to the aspiring wealth in such countries.
Build a flagship museum Jaguar to showcase all the greats that have made you the car company you are today.

The heritage museum isn't owned by Jag and Brown's Lane is closing because it has all been sold off.
I'd agree, its more about the sale of the Brown's Lane land for housing than destroying the collection.I believe whilst Ford still owned JLR they submitted a planing application to build a Hotel and Conference Centre on the land to the left of the Heritage Centre which is used by but not owned by the Trust, (rather than the right where the JLR and Aston Martin factories are) if that land was ownned by Ford it may now be under JLR ownership which could make it an ideal site.
Fortunately - thanks to the work of Peter Mitchell - Jaguar Cars have not owned the collection since 1983 : they are all held in an independent trust. Otherwise I'm sure they would have been sold off by now !
I find it strange that, to store and keep the collection in good order with a lot of the cars in running order, the trust must need quite extensive premises.
It would not need to be that much bigger or much more expensive to have both the workshop, storage area and a display showroom on the same site. After all, the exhibition hall at Brown's Lane is very small with only room for a small fraction of the cars to be displayed at any one time.
Fortunately the principal exhibit : XJ13 is usually there, centre stage.
Gaydon or perhaps Beaulieu would be a suitable location to house both the workshop and exhibition.
Surely this could be achieved ?

This is indeed sad news.
I was there in the summer and was treated to a ride in NUB.
The car park is very small, and would be no good for Sunday Service.
164/365 - 13 June 2011 - Jaguar XK120 - NUB 120
If anybody is interested, I have a small collection of period Jaguar competition pix here, including a short video I took whilst on this drive in NUB. It sounds wonderful.

All serious car manufacturers respect their heritage and hold a heritage collection. It is not an optional extra - particularly for prestige cars. Fundamentally it is a vital marketing tool. "A dad takes his 9 year old son/daughter around a collection of old Jaguars... 20 years later and the son/daughter heads to a Jaguar dealer..."
I hope their plans are ways of making the heritage collection more widely available to the public.
That is a tenuous marketing strategy at best! I hope their plans are ways of making the heritage collection more widely available to the public.

PH, maybe this is a good excuse to try and get a Sunday Service held there.
Just a thought....
My thoughts exactly, and i'd be supprised if they're not already looking into it.Just a thought....
We do specify space for at least 400 cars these days, so need plenty of room.

XJ13 prototype.
that is a truly lovely car - we had it in the studio this week, got to have a right old nose around it judging by the stickers on it, it gets an outing at Goodwood every year, so not likely to be mothballed
