RE: Personalised plates: Tell Me I'm Wrong
Discussion
I sort of agree. I do not mind so much car specific ones. I know the Clio press car came with "cCUP" on it but retained 7 digits.
A lot of the Racing Pumas and Ford cars have FMC which I love or XXFRP which looks less cluttered on the very wide front end.
Personal plates, names, birthdays etc? Not for me. Just looks crass.
I'm probably the most OEM guy I know when it comes to cars and I love rare petrolhead cars that are still wearing the original plate as the badge of honour after years but I just think some cars they can work.
I always loved the Ford GT with the FMC number plate. It imo reeked of heritage and class. Others sadly don't.

I have a personal plate, but I think the very name sums them up.
Mine was a gift from my mother for my 21st birthday. I'm the only real car nut in my family, and for my 21st she wanted to get me something that would last, related to my interest in cars, rather than something for a car I had at the time, that would inevitably be sold on. So mine is important to me for that reason, it was a really nice gesture from her that she clearly thought about. The only part of mine that relates to me, is the last 3 letters, which are my initials. She chose the 'D4' part because she did her research, and realised that with my interest in older cars, I'd at least have a chance of putting it on some older machinery with it being a 'D' prefix plate.
For me, it's a nice touch that makes the car mine, I also use it as an online alias, so it's easy to recognise and associate on an owners club meet etc.
That said, I don't know if I'd go out and buy one if I hadn't been given mine. If I find them at all annoying, it's when you see a private plate relating to car a model, that's been kept and put on a new car, there was a chap who lived in the same village as me some years back that had a plate on a Volvo S80 relating to it, that has since been moved on through an A6 allroad, a Skoda Superb, and I think is on a Merc now. I associate it with the S80 and it sends my OCD haywire

Personally, I wouldn't ever spend my money on a personalised plate as I think they are a bit 'look at me' and I don't see that they improve a car in any way. I like to see really expensive cars (F40s, F1s, CGTs, etc) wearing an original plate as it strikes me, rationally or otherwise, that the owner is more interested in owning and enjoying the car than worrying about what image they project.
My 2P worth
If its YOUR money and YOUR car then why should other people give a rats 4rse what has been added to their particular motor of choice.
It's no different to other types of car modding such as changing the wheels or lowering the suspension or even sticking some god awful tacky looking bodykit to the sides of a vehicle. Overall, all it does is change the appearance of a car someone else owns. If it makes them happy then that's their choice and no one else's.
Whether you like or dislike the change they have made to their car is frankly irrelevant. That's the trouble these days, people worry/moan/rant to much about what other people do.

I don't know if it's a common spot of anyone's but to me it seems to be a north/south thing.
Moving from t'north down to Brizzle I want to get one back on mine but when I look around I would stand out for the wrong reasons so I've put it off a fair bit.
Main reason I want it? Because I want to disguise the age of the car.

Butchered number plates aside, I don't agree that a dateless plate with someones initials is poor. My parents have a dateless plate that has no meaningful letters, but it came on my great-grandads car from new in the late 50s and has been kept in the family.
When I see people (girls seem to be bad for it) that have X999 JAX and other rubbish - and one woman I see every day going into work J8 X JB - looks naff and I don't understand the desire to let complete strangers know what your name is.

In general I dislike them and can't stand the 'novelty' ones with dodgy spacing and creative use of fixings.
But I do have one, thanks to my wife who bought it for me. I wasn't sure about it at first but love it now; it looks a lot better than the original one (which actually looked like a cheap private plate in a way -AJ55 XXR I think) and is related to the car as well as having my initials. I'm told it's quite subtle and some people don't notice it, which I like.
So here goes, the plate on my 550i:
I like to think that it says 'here's someone who likes his car' rather than 'I'm a complete tosser' but I do expect some abuse on here .

Not a fan of D14ANE type plates, with itallic fonts etc, but I personally think a plate with fewer digits than the standard seven looks neater and less cluttered to me. Each to their own though - I can't see why it would or should bother you tbh?
To illustrate my point:Good:

I'm kind of in the middle on this one, I have a private plate which is a single letter, single number then my initials, it's spaced correctly and is in standard font etc, i don't love it but think it looks cleaner than the normal plate that was on the car. I however hate any plate that is badly spaced, in a crap font or has been messed with to try and read as something it clearly doesn't say
I am exactly the same down to plate format and dislike of dodgy spelling/italics/spacing etcMr MXT said:

Totally agree with Chris here, couldn't have said it better myself. Would you put a big sticker on the back of your car saying 'My name's __'? If not then why do the equivalent on your number plate?!
If it made me happy then yes I would. Ex Boy Racer said:

I would never consider purchasing a private plate for a car. I actually dislike them immensely.
However I find myself in the strange predicament of having purchased a car with a car related plate. I would have considered selling the plate when the next generation of its model launches later this year.
However the plate was put on the car at new, and has remained on the car since. The previous owner actually made a point of stating that he would like the plate to remain with the car. I now feel a somewhat sense of duty to leave it attached.
