We get a few of these in at work from time to time. No obvious cause, it just pops. It probably had a little scratch that made a weak point and then with the glass expanding/contracting with temperature the weak point was weak enough to go, and as it's tempered once one bit goes, it all goes.

Just take a letter into your local vehicle regustration office telling them you wish to have the vehicle allocated an age related mark and have no wish to retain the the NI plate with your V5C, MOT and tax disc and they'll sort you out for free!
