A stage 1 remapped 335d, all the car you'll ever need??

Like the title says, is a lightly tuned 335d all the car you ever need? I've been looking into it and it seems the standard car (286hp) can be easily and almost cheaply remapped up to 350hp and still retain its 42mpg! They can bought for as little as £7k and remapped for 600 odd, anyone think of anything better??
If you're going to keep it for a few years and reap the benefits of the fuel economy and remap they are meant to be good. I've only driven a 320d SE E90 and they are nice to drive just a little dull sounding and I don't like the modern manual gearbox/clutch feel on modern BMWs it's hard to drive smoothly. I know the 330d/335d sound nicer plus you have a smooth six speed auto so it should drive nicely. From experience facelifted E46 M-sport cars are too harsh for me and I've read that the pre-facelift E90 M-sport cars are a bit firm. The E90 SE I drove seemed a little firmer than E46 SE cars. Also test drive some cheaper cars that you really like because the money you will save on depreciation/remap/dealer mark up/possibly finance you can put towards fuel. Just giving you the option of thinking with your heart as well as your head.
My current steed was the "Every car you'll ever need" before the 335d, i.e the E46 330d, and after 18 months I can tell you it isn't. Maybe take a little bit off the range (how often I fill up doesn't bother me, as it's hardly an arduous experience), and add a whole lot to the soundtrack and you may be close.
Or as it's otherwise known as, a 330i.

An aging, high mileage, complex diesel car with two turbos and a remap, bought at a bottom of the market price, what could possibly go wrong ?
Nothing has ever gone wrong in that situation ever, nobody has ever bought a "prestige" car at the bottom of the market and then been shocked when it breaks catastrophically costing more money than they'd ever thought possible. Nope.GG89 said:
Is a BMW 3 series diesel all the car you'll ever need?
Hell no, not if I ever want to have fun!
You think a FWD ST is fun then? The one I drove was a lot less fun than a 335d.Hell no, not if I ever want to have fun!
Yep there are plenty of more fun cars out there but the ST and RS aren't in that list.
Anyway it's not all the car everyone ever needs but it has been for us for 5.5 years. But I want petrol next, more for a change than anything else. And I want 200 less kgs. But I will always want RWD.
fast Diesels are a joy to drive and can be hustled down a road at an astonishing rate of knots very easily but they lack the drama and entertainment of a fast petrol car. Depends aha you want.
You are kidding yourself if you think that 350bhp is ever going to come at a cost of 40mpg.

If you can't have fun with a rear drive front engined car with 286bhp then god help you Hell no, not if I ever want to have fun!
I see the point of your post though - it's a daily driver, a practical car. Obviously a Caterham or 2-Eleven is going to be more fun, and if you want daily transport and don't need four seats and roof bars, then take your pic from a Cayman, 911, Elise, NSX etc!

Only if I need a car to be of dubious relaibilty, resale grey, boring, ugly, utterly useless in snow, diesel and make everyone think i'm a wker.
And you think a few LRs and a Micra make you look cool then?Only if I need a car to be of dubious relaibilty, resale grey, boring, ugly, utterly useless in snow, diesel and make everyone think i'm a wker.
Having owned a LR 110 for a year (we had to sell it after massive unreliability) and hired a Micra, I think you might not be the best person to judge… but hey, this is PH where experience doesn't matter but being a bit "edgy" does…Muppet.

If I'm driving my 320d on fun slippery roads as of late, then I tend to get about 40mpg, but on my 70 mile round trip commute I tend to get 50-60 depending on the speed I choose. Mine's a manual with 16" wheels - there's no way I'd swap for an auto 335d on 18s; straight line speed isn't everything - most of my drivingis at about 50mph on sweeping b roads, or a steady motorway speeds, so no need for power at all.
I think I better start poking around for my lost mpg...EGR? DPF? (it's an auto but i would expect it to be on par with my 1.6 civic @46-49 mpg)Toaster Pilot said:

Rest assured it will be the dealers fault when it goes pop too...Fast Bug said:

Anyone car to give examples of all these 335ds going pop? They are plenty old enough now but I've yet to hear of any blowing up despite knowing a lot of owners. Look after them and they look after you. Like any car.Vladimir said:
