it is weekdays, but weekends I do the family driving as I like being on the road. Just needs to be a wee bit practical.

Although the desire to mug that off in favour of an S2000 or 350z is mighty appealing.

Stupid family, getting in the way of my dreams.

I'd take the Golf GTi over the FR Leon at that price bracket. Doubt you'll get a FL Mk2 Leon FR/Cupra for £7.5k with the improved interior and the ride quality is pretty harsh on the pre FL FR (not sure about cupra IIRC it always had a better ride quality than other pre FL sporty Leons).

Worth mentioning the FR TFSI is equivalent to the GTI, the Cupra is equivalent to the ED30 with the bigger K04 turbo. Cupra is a bargain really when you think of it like that imo.

Cheers that clears up the differences in models/facelifts etc. Sort of have an idea of what to look for now!

I can't imagine going from a Honda to a VAG. My Civic replaced a MKII Golf 11 years ago and it is head and shoulders the better car to own. I realise you are after a hot hatch and had different requirements to me, but there is something very reassuring about Honda reliability.

The Honda has been bulletproof - in that respect it is mad to get rid as it really has done a great job, but my commute has become a trickle to the station and it almost feels like too much car right now. Also this is my last chance for a wee while to have something a bit frisky.

Totally agree though, the reliability and general worry-free driving of the Accord has been great. Just doesn't fit my needs at the moment and I have the itchy trigger finger smile

So the accord has been an absolute rock but the time is now for a fun hot hatch before impending baby plans lead me to overcomponsate and get a giant volvo.

Was looking at the M135i but can't justify the numbers right now which led me to think about a bit of gti or something for a year.

Looking at mk5s they seem to be at 6-8k for a solid one privately and that is tempting. On the other side the Leon fr is cheaper but the interior looks a bit cheap. Cupra an option?

Can anyone advise are there significant difference between a Leon fr and a gti? Aside from interior would I miss out on much if I went Spanish? Well, germanic Spanish lol

All advice appreciated hhappy to pull the trigger on a good golf if that's the consensus.

Ps anyone want a 2006 accord for a good price :-)

Cheersm
You've got it in one. I think the Mk5 Golf gti looks a bit nicer than the mk2 Leon fr and has a slightly higher quality interior but the badge means it's slightly cheaper like for like. To drive they felt similar I'm wary of the placebo effect and mileage differences nothing stood out. Leon has a slightly different driving position I think it's a bit higher could be wrong.
The Mk5 Gti is much stiffer with loads more grip than the Mk4 Gti. The manual gearbox feels better and the DSG is good except at junctions and in slow traffic. Interior slightly worse quality than the Mk4. I've not driven a Mk2 Cupra but it will be stiffer with similar grip and torque but it doesn't tail off until 6K ish not the 5K ish of the FR/GTi. It costs more to insure but looks more interesting and is more tunable.

I have never driven anything VAG that I liked,I have driven the MK5 Golf TDI and thought it was cack, the main problem being the front end felt really heavy, however the GTI is well regarded, a friend had one and had it remapped, his other car was a 335ci, he thought the Golf was the better car, I would do the GTI thing and wait for 135 values to drop, the Golf will always have a strong depreciation, keep it a year and you wont lose to much money, you may even love it and keep it.
So what you're saying is you drove a heavy FWD hatchback with a heavy diesel engine, and it felt heavy. I wasn't expecting that.

Is that the later model? I hadn't considered it as I heard it was a bit too stiff on longer journeys but am happy to be corrected

Yeah, worth getting a test drive if one is local to you.

The EP3 (previous gen) is apparently the more hardcore one but i've driven neither so i cannot comment smile

Horrendous is a tad harsh - http://www.ukcardeal.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/SEAT...

Have had a Cupra, Mk5 R32 and an S3 - I'd take the cupra or s3 over the r32 anyday - once the novelty of the noise wears off, it's a frustratingly lazy engine.
I agree. They do sound good but the Mk4 R32 in particular is dissapointing. It's a slightly heavier, thirstier but nicer sounding Audi S3/Leon Cupra R/TT with harder sports seats I didn't like. Nice if you can justify the cost for the noise but it doesn't drive better than any of the alternatives. You should drive a Mk4 2.8 VR6 4 motion Golf/Bora though! Worse than any 1.8T/2.0TFSI in every way apart from possibly wafting while burning loads of fuel. They don't even sound good, at least not standard. R32 noise with a loud exhaust though. MMMM. That's the reason they are loved. smile

You really have to test drive one. Everyone's expectations are different and some people insist cars are really harsh where as others have no issue.

As it happens a mate of mine bought a FN2 instead of a Leon Cupra R as he found the civic softer and his missus thinks it's quieter. They took theirs from the UK to Poland and back and had no complaints about the ride, loved the practicality an general running costs.

I thought the FN2 was a bit of a non event in standard form :-(

Yes, go look in the classifieds. You can get a much newer lower mileage FN2 than Golf GTI. Tempted myself but I just don't like the looks at all, inside is fairly nice and different though!

Nothing wrong with that interior, well not to me anyway. Always thought of Golfs as just a little bland !!
