The best story I have heard is of the usual sign on the rear window of a van saying "Nothing of value inside". Cue the broken window and small handwritten note left inside saying... "Just checking" smile

What makes you think they can read ?

Why would they bother reading notes ?

Why would they believe you ?

My van had nothing in it so I left the rear / side doors unlocked.

I presume the idiots never tried the handles before damaging the door / handles / lock and in doing so, effectively locked it.

I did then put up a big sign "REWARD OFFERED - for information to find the stupidest thieves in the area, who couldn't even break into an unlocked van"

You need some car security window film. Look online for examples like this:

As you can see, whilst they prevent any entry into the vehicle, they can still be pushed out from the inside should you need to escape in a crash
That's worth looking into, thanks Matt. Don't fancy driving to Malaysia for it though...hehe

Only problem I can see is a ham fisted thief. Mine appears to have put a bar in the window frame, thus damaging the frame. Said tosser would no doubt do more damage trying to force this stuff.

There was something in new scientist recently about pictures of eyes lower crime more than pictures of cameras.

I forgot to mention, 3M make and sell it in UK, as well as a few other firms. It was featured on Police Camera Action 7 or 8 years ago now, Alistair Stewart whacking it with a hammer and still not getting in, then going inside the car and pushing the damaged pane out from the inside with one hand.

Does your car not have an alarm at all? Normally, hitting the reinforced window should set the alarm off and deter the thief before they have a go at the doorframe

Leave the doors unlocked if there really is nothing worth stealing.
That's the best solution to broken glass and a smashed in door. (They usually try the door first )
Leave it open, broken worthless iPod in glove box, criminals simply open the door steal the iPod and leg it to crack converters leaving your car without damage.
I think a sign would only draw attention to your car.

As mentioned earlier, I did that with a car on my lawn, but some scrote stole the rear leather seat cushion.

My car's on the road at the moment and it's steep. If it's unlocked and someone gets inside and releases the handbrake, the insurer won't cough up when my car rolls into something.

Yes, it's a Volvo and you can't hear the alarm if a gnat's farting nearby.

I knew someone with a soft top that was slashed to gain entry and burgle. Except there was nothing of value inside and the whole soft top had to be replaced.

Owner was not impressed when later I showed how to gain entry without doing any damage.

Few soft tops are secure.

That's what worries me, coming back to a slashed roof.

I saw a sign on the back of a van the other day:

"No tools left in this van overnight. Just an angry pit bull terrier. With AIDS."

Someone broke into my car and I found it in the morning with the contents strewn over the payment.

Nothing missing as apparently thieves don't like 10 year old Tom Toms, 2003 20gig iPods or holders for ancient HTC Desires.

Didn't take any of my CDs either. Obviously I must have a weird taste in music.

On a slight aside, when I lived in Manchester I had my car broken into twice - once to nick the stereo (which was old, battered and really worth 10p). Then a second time, even before I had replaced anything! Went through the car on the hope that I had replaced stuff, but clearly hadnt. Nightmare.

A friend at the time also had his car broken into and the same, but he left a note on the dash saying "no stereo in car". Came back one day and car broken into and someone had left another note saying "just checking".....

hehe

Slightly funny yes, but an illustration of what happens. There is no honour, no etiquette and its all about the money for the next hit. Some thieves even broke into my late Aunties home to steal her disability car - because they had nicked all of the other ones!

Best thing to do? Move.
