The 'Black Edition' Trend of hatch backs

Anything with the word 'edition' helps sell cars. People are made to feel special by owning something which is a little bit more unique (although often produced in vast numbers).
The trim levels L, GL, GLX, XS, XSi, GTi et al are just not enough to generate much interest with the public any more. Nobody is satisfied unless they are buying into something sprinkled with glitter, even if it is a turd.

I think Ford Black Editions are usually really well specced run-out models released just before a new model is released. I do, however, stand to be corrected!
I don't know about "Black Edition", but Ford did a Focus Ebony, which was basically a black Focus with all the extras.I thought this thread was going to be about the special version of the current hot hatch crowd, much like the AMG Blacks are the top shelf versions of the AMG line.
HTH
Pretty sure there has been a Focus Black (Mk1, had different alloys and leather trim, but was essentially a Zetec) - there was certainly a Focus Ebony.
ETA - quick Google shows a Ford Focus Mk1 black had a 1.6. Example I found was a 51 plate.

The earliest one I can think of was the 406 coupe.

Pretty sure Toyota did Blue, White and "fire" editions of the Aygo. Similar idea.
Porsche and Ferrari make 'fire' models, GT3 and 458 spring to mind.Mr2Mike said:

It is a marketing wheeze to bump up pricing / profits or cement loyalty. Been around for years.
The colour black, in most of the world, is usually associated with "premium" quality or pricing. It is why most home TVs, the centre of your home, are black.
And "edition", "series", etc. all denote limited availability, hence exclusivity.

- Not actual reason why TVs are black.

According to that link 'The Silver & Black Special Editions were manufactured for the UK market between the months of June and October in 2002"http://www.406coupeclub.org/Coupe_Specifications.a...
The Ford Puma Black was launched in 2000.
I understand that branding a product with a special badge can make it more attractive to potential customers, Or even clear up end of line stock, but until recently, GTi was maybe the only badge that was shared across makers, but now 'Black edition' seems to be everywhere, why can they not think of something a little more original to get a punters interest?
Its like seeing a 'Renault Clio Ghia' or a 'Skoda Fabia GT3 RS'
What good names could they use instead of 'Black Edition'? Serious or not, id like to hear your suggestions.
