That's gorgeous.

Funnily enough I fell in love with these cars when I also went in my first girlfriend's brother's car. Man, it was just insanely faster than anything else I'd been in as as teenager! Was obsessed ever since. Took me 10 years to actually buy one mind, and to be honest it was a disappointment, but I think that's only because it was leggy... it fell apart in 6 months. I really think you can't run one as a 'main' car any more. I will get another one if I'm ever lucky enough to own a garage!

This was mine, a bit chavvy I guess. It'd definitely be going 100% standard if I do ever get another... (excuse the rusty arch - that was sorted after this picture)

The guy that bought it off me has done a fantastic recondition on it. Wish I never sold it mainly because I could have got three times as much now! frown

Carisma (who trimmed/built below) were originally running out of a garage behind my old school. We regularly used to see this running around. The attention to detail was amazing. Must have weighed a ton! Brings back fond memories.

The article took me back to wanting one as a teenager.

I also remember going out in a mate's Uno Turbo. Similar recipe; 1.4 turbo, 105bhp or something, in 900kg or so. Felt properly quick. I could never find a decent one to buy though as most were smashed up or modded - and often both - producing a fragile and wayward mess.

...off to the classifieds...

There was a white mk1 on ebay a few weeks ago but alas it has gone.

I've never owned or driven one but I would love to have done. My mates and I went through the 205/Golf GTI phase but I don't think I knew anyone with a 5GTT.

When I was in Middle School one of the PE teachers had a Nova SR just like my Dad's which I thought was cool enough.

Then she got a GT Raider which I thought was just awesome. I guess it must have been new, or at least nearly new, and was bog-stock as a result.

Great stuff.

I'd just get the wheels polished I like them looking like the red one in the Link.

It's great to be alive when you drive a Renault 5

I guess your sister wasn't fat then? Phat maybe?

Just read a magazine article and they used that same car as PH did. They too commented on late boost and non correlation between the boost gauge sweeping right and the shove being felt. I think renaults car needs some fettling. I remember both of mine being on pretty much full boost by 3200rpm.

As already said they go great running a bar boost, usually around 150bhp with plenty of torque. As standard they just arnt that quick, upto 80 neck and neck with a 205 1.9 again as said above. A lot of people claimed 190bhp+ figures back in the day but I never actually saw a 5 make those figures on the rollers. Dodgy 90's tuning methods (remember 5th injectors plumbed into rs turbos) melted a lot of 5's down.

Besides they didn't really need 170+ in reality, it was just a numbers game with the other turbo hatches of the time. I'd like to be to buy another to tinker with, I just think £4K+ on something with 1980's Renault engineering takes commitment.

The one car I remember that would take on all these pocket rockets, that was as ugly as sin and handle like a demented pig in a wheel barrow was the ... MG Maestro Turbo.

In standard form this things were 0-60 in 7 secs if you could keep it in a straight line.
Horrendous torque steer and built out of chocolate and tin foil.

I remember being really impressed with the acceleration as it beat the pants of my brothers MK2 Astra GTE 16V.
Then the astonishment at how much quicker it was once I had adjusted the carburetor up properly on the gas analyser.

I don't think there are any left.

Had the pleasure of owning 3 of these, 2 electric blueD platers. Followed by brand new G plate in Red. Got pulled more times by the old bill. Mental good fun, Chunky seats and a dash that had french styling all over it. Fond memories of the summer of 89. Whoever thought a separate fan for the carb was a good idea, needed shooting. Mine would either set the alarm off at daft O'clock, usually just after I had opened the front door. Either that or drain the battery.

Remember taking a bird out to a pub on the river in Richmond, having had a swiftie got back in the Car, furiously cranking the engine much to everyones amusement. At times I could have set fire to the bloody thing. Once peddling it though it could bring out a grin a mile wide.

Seriously at the time, it was probably the best bang for buck ever. The only other thing I hankered for, but never owned was a 105 TC Strada Abarth.

I always regret never having owned a 5GT (though I went through a series of 205s instead, so not total regret).

Bit trivial, but don't entirely agree with this part of the article
"While middle-class owners were cherishing Golfs and 205 GTIs as future classics the 5 GT found its fall to the bottom of the socio-economic demographic practically unchecked; this was the car chosen for Ali G to drive around Staines in the film spun off the TV series."

The late 90s to early noughties was a low point for both the 5 and the 205. Even to some extent the Golfs too. The chav mags of the day were always adorned with horrendous examples of both the 5GT and the 205 GTI. Both were equally molested and both fell to shed values for a long time. In fact it's only in very recent years that 205 values have started to pick up. Around this period there was no shortage of chavved up Golfs either, though they still held higher values and the "tuning" route chosen by the VW scene was a little different and less tastelessly "in your face".

I remember Jamie's (Carisma) creations very well. Awful. May have had a good attention to detail, but it was the age old case of any body can create/slap on a body kit but if you have no eye for design it'll always be a dog's dinner

It does sound like it's not at its best. The brakes were pretty good by standards of the time as I recall....although modern cars have improved a lot

I toyed with the idea of a 9 turbo for it's extreme Q car nature. Substitute TL badges (or whatever is standard trim level) and grin,

I remember watching an old rally video from the late 80s ( maybe Tour de Corse but certainly Tarmac ) where they had a 5GTT, 9 Turbo and 11 Turbo all competing - 3 different models all with the same engine!
