Could have gone better in the BMW forum where they might have understood what the OP was on about.
And forgiven him for a crap thread title.

Can someone explain to me what these plate frames are for?
Because many European countries change the plates regularly, few people actually screw the plates to the car. Instead, they screw a plastic frame on, which the plate clips into. Because the plates are government-issued, the dealer can't slap their advertising on them - so they advertise on the frame instead.

The OP thinks it's cool to have a random German dealer's advertising on the plastic tat that our long-term widely-supplied plates render irrelevant.

Very funny,
Seriously are there ANY god quality wheel covers?
No.
There must be one. I'll just have to find it myself.....

E91 Door bins anyone?

And where's Jinkster?
Send your wheel to Jack at Royal Steering Wheels. £120 and it will come back with whatever thickness you desire and covered in lovely leather of your choice.
Don't bother messing with tacky covers.

FFS MAN! Do you not listen?!!!

It's his wife's car; it's 'white goods' for Christ sake. He doesn't want to be spending £120 on something that is all form over function!!!

It doesn't fking matter now anyway! He needs to find a plastic surround for the numberplate; it's a fking emergency?!&!£&!?!!!!!

AND DOOR BINS FFS?!!!!!!!!

It would be worth checking that the standard UK plate fits the German frames. I imported an Opel some years ago from Germany with dealer frames on, but I cannot remember if the UK plate fitted, they are certainly thicker than the pressed metal plates from Europe. Also don't rely on the clips around the edge of the frame to hold the plate in place, you will still need to screw the plates on.
I would also check the legality of it. It is entirely possible that the German garages may not be permitted to sell their plate holder to be fitted on a non-German car. Of course, a translation of the OP's German email would help.

Also, it is possible that fitting a German plate-holder to a UK registered car would result in the police taking an interest in the car. Is that something you want for your wife?

It's a bit of plastic that fits around the plate. Of course it's legal.

It's a bit of generic plastic, but which just happens to have their branding printed on it. No other magic powers.

Generic "I'll see if anybody in the office understands wtf you're on about or cares."

It's a bit like the reaction a German would probably get from writing to a UK Jag dealer and asking for a dealer sticker for their rear window.

I don't know why a true enthusiast would appreciate an advert from a dealer you've never bought anything from let alone the car itself and a leather steering wheel cover is going to look fairly nasty.

Instead, don't bother with any of the cheesy crap and look at fitting a new steering wheel - it's not a difficult job and Ebay is full of used M Sport examples. You could even seek out a particularly tatty one for cheap and then send it to one of the guys who does leather retrims - net result, a brand new feeling M Sport wheel.

You'll appreciate that much more than a fake cover and a plastic frame from a random German dealer.
I'm not looking for any M Sport wheels, had them before and loved them but don't want to fork out £200+ as my wife wont understand why it is worth £200... just want some genuine leather covers for her as she finds it too thin.
For £260 I can buy some 17" M Sport wheels on Potenza run flats (she wants to keep the runflats!!)

The plate frames are a well known thing on e90post and bimmerforums... think Jinkster on here has succeeded... Frankfurt has so many requests they just list it up for sale on the BMW-Original Teile.
Erm...can't you just buy your plate frame from where is it "for sale on the BMW-Original Teile"? (no idea what that is btw)
