RE: Shed of the Week: Nissan Primera GT
Discussion
I worked for TWR during the Nissan Le Mans campaign in 97 & 98. We had loads of these as company cars and for the drivers to use at Le Mans. They were always variable in performance, the ones that were carefully run in were noticeably slower than the ones that were thrashed from day one. On the way back from Le Mans in 98 a friend and I managed 109 miles in 52 minutes on a very empty, dry autoroute back towards Calais to catch the ferry home. I wouldn't dare try that now. Fantastic cars considering the design is 20 years old.
Deja vu! http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... That one doesn't seem to be on the road anymore.
148bhp doesn't sound much these days, but they seem to be quite highly regarded. I remember having a lift in a briskly driven SRI and that seemed quite quick at the time.
Paint job is very 90s though. I hate it!

I read in a car magazine that before the launch of the GT a team from Nissan in Japan came over to drive the car and were shocked at how stiff the suspension was and demanded that it be softened.
They softened off the settings on the SRi but the GT was left as Dirk specced itI had a P-reg 2.0SLX (130hp?)as a company car. All my colleagues who drove it agreed it was a better car than their Mondeos and Vectras. Unfortunately its metallic red paintwork had a definite pinky tint. Very comfortable driving position due to seat and steering wheel being in line and square to each other (car actually designed for RHD rather than a mod'd LHD design like the Fords and Vauxhalls). Seat also had tilt adjustment to the front of the base.

I had two Almera GTis, lovely engines & really good fun cars, although particularly prone to rust.
My friend had a Primera GT which by all accounts was a better handling car, although he did park it on its roof so it can't have been that good!
I found they were incredibly grippy and would carry much more corner speed than their contemporaries - but I always felt that when it went wrong, it wouldn't be too progressive and you'd get in a big mess very quickly. My friend had a Primera GT which by all accounts was a better handling car, although he did park it on its roof so it can't have been that good!

Cant rate these cars enough amazing car and handling 148bhp not much by today standards but a brilliant car and very fragile. .
I must have been lucky with mine - it had done 80k miles when I got it Ran it for 3 years and nothing went wrong with it
Oil filter was a bit of a git to remove though - got a set of socket filter caps to be able to make oil changes easier

Well, I had a non-GT one in non-green ordinary blue, and I liked it for about 3 minutes. Once I'd driven it more than 5 yards the problems started to emerge. Had to take a shunt to get round the corner in the car park that my previous car did without even thinking about it. Felt the herringbone brickwork on the car park surface, yet I'd never noticed it before. Had to steer to the right all the way home to avoid running off the left edge of the road. Had the aircon re-gassed after 2 years and it lasted 3 months before it stopped working again. My first car with remote locking and the locks popped open randomly.
My first and last Nissan. But I'm thinking about a Leaf ...
