Seems you can get a 2003 SUZUKI Liana GL 1.6 (I think this is what Top Gear used) for about £2,500. If I can get 4 other people interested we could all put £500 in each to buy one. 9 other people and its only £250 each. We could then sell it after the event (assuming we don't break it) and get most of our cash back. Anyone interested?

This is a forum and this thread is about expressing your opinion one way or the other. Don't flame me for my opinion...if you don't agree or like my opinion then fair enough but i'm certainly not whinging, and everyone here is entitled to their 10 pence worth. I thought that's what it was all about. I'm sure Ted has worked hard to arrange it all and i am sure it will be immense fun for those that go, but it's not for me on price or format...that's it, so who's bloody whinging!!

Right back at you! That is my "10 pence worth" of opinion, if you don't like it, then fine, just as I don't have to like yours. I think you have taken it far to personally, I never mentioned any names, as there are far too many, so I'm not flaming just you, though it appears you are to me... how deliciously ironic.

I did want to leave it at jsut my last post, but I'm still fuming, so I'll carry on...

What's really pissed me off is the amount of negative feedback for this (your's is included, don't get that wrong), when all that's happened is Ted and Co have tried to put something nice together for us to do if we want to, for some money to make it happen given that a minimum of X people need to go, nad hopefully a bit of profit on top. And the majority of the response has just been bitched about how it will be unfair, or over priced for what you get, blah blah blah.

Maybe I'm coming at this all wrong. I understand that you need to provide something people will be interested doing, so this feedback may be useful in making the next one more successful. But god, if I was Ted right now, I'd be thinking of pulling the plug on this one, let alone thinking about doing another. Poor guy is damned if he does and damned if he don't!
As he is the only one sorting something like this out for us PHers right now, maybe we should give him our support and say thanks for actually doing something for us, rather than lambasting him for his obvious stupidity at failing to notice how expensive it is (which I really think it's not) and for the lack of a level playing field (so just make sure you drive better!).
He's put the idea forward of using HIS OWN car to set a benchmark in, but there's been nothing concrete put forward by anybody else but Pete, mostly just comments putting it down.

I for one would love to see some of the fast cars whooped by some of the less exotic stuff.

No I won't be going, but it's not because anything is wrong with the idea - I'd love to go, and even with all the issues I may have with it, I'd far rather dip my toe in the water and see what it was really like first. Then say I think X,Y,Z could be done better next time. Rahter than posting from the comfort of my PC, with my (obvious) wealth of information, experience and general amazingness in these areas say how it should be done better before it's happened!

But as my car is fecked, I'm broke and I'm mega busy trying to change both of those things I can't... so I know what I'll do, I'll not rip into the actions of others who have put themselves on the line.

well I'll be booking up shortly....so what if I can get someting similar a bit cheaper?....this is a different experience!

I will see if Im allowed to take a few cars at once for interests sake.

I'm sure I'll then have my times laughed at/compared to The Stig (and probably Wogan and Whitely!) but I dont much care

Am in that area over Xmas so will get a time around then. (oh, and will ready my cold/wet/snow excuses now)

I accept your posting wasn't directed at me personally, fair enough but i certainly wasn't flaming you in return, and i think anyone reading what i wrote might agree. But never mind, clearly we can agree to differ.

With a tow rope? That would be interesting at the follow-through.

There does seem to be a lot of biatching and negativity in this thread. IMOHO I don't think the price is too much. You are paying for personal tuition and exclusive use of a circuit. I dare say that the price would be considerably higher if the same were to be provided at Oulton, Cadwell etc...

I think the idea of a Leader Board is great. And not unfair at all. In fact those with the 'performance' cars will have to be on their toes to avoid being beaten by lesser machines.

I for one would like to know how my car compares to the Liana and the Chevy given that they are similar machines. The amount of different drivers that have posted times in the TG cars I think it would be a good comparison.

Yes an open pit track day isn't that much more expensive and you will have more track time but:
a, There is the risk that some twazzock is going to crash into your car.
b, You don't have bragging rights to say that you've driven the TG track!

It's a bit like staying in the Hilton on Park Lane. There isn't much difference between it and the (cheaper) Hilton Metropole on Edware Road but the bragging kudos is so much more. If that sort of thing is important to you.

Well, I mentioned this too my Mrs yesterday and she said I can have it for my Christmas present from her. So Thank-you Mrs KC, I'm chuffed to bits!

I own one of the cars, that one of the stig's has taken around the circuit. It's also a car that a few PH's have and I am very much looking forward to seeing how my time, the stig's and other PH's in the same type of car get on.paperbag

Top Gear is my favourite telly program, having had petrol going through my veins since I was very young (please don't tell social services, my mum and dad will get in trouble!)

I've often thought about how good it would be to try out the Top Gear track myself. It's simply one of those things in life I'd like to have a crack at. Thanks Ted for sorting this out, much appreciated!bow
I've done track days at Castle Combe, Brands Hatch, Goodwood and Cadwell Park. This event is completely different to track days. I just hope to god it's dry when I do it.
yikes
Or I'll have to be deducting that 4 seconds that Clarkson's always going on about for a wet lap!

That's funny, mine said exactly the same to me yesterday. It's a very generous offer but I slightly undecided whether I should do it or not, given the mixed comments on this thread.

If you're local and want some fun, then why not.

If you're interested in proper driver-training, go to an outfit like Ride&Drive.

If you're after a lot of time on-track with some instruction alongside, go to a BaT, Goldtrack, RMS etc. day for the same money.

I'm not bitching per-se, I'm just pointing out that, like many of these things, you don't get a lot of time for your money.

Well I'm just thinking it'll be damn fine pub chat material for years to come and I get to see if I can get anywhere near a Stig!
Just gotta be done I reckon!

I just spoke to Graham at Plans Motorsport and he's advised they're looking to use data logging equipment and an in-car camera. So you can analyse the footage with the instructor between timed laps and take it home with you on a DVD too! That's it, i'm hooked, hook line and sinker, kid in a toy shop, pig in shit, please take my money!

I'd love to do this but it really depends on the noise limits.

Has anyone asked what the limit is yet?

For training on a one-to-one basis with exclusive use of a track (no one else in your way etc) I think it represents rather good value for money.

It does.

But, and no disrespect intended, I'd question the value of exclusive use of a track. Once there's more than say 15-20 on-track it starts getting in the way of learning, certainly.

Just me though...I'd rather do an open-pit day with extra instruction at Donny, Oulton, Brands or Spa...they have more 'meaning' to me (1, 3, and esp. 4) than the TG test-track does.

You can't explore car control to it's limits (eg. when you spin when you get it wrong) on a track day as it annoys everyone sharing the facilities with you. If you spin on a closed track you only annoy/amuse yourself; there are no red flags and no lost time for others. It's as simple as that really.

No, but you can with Ride&Drive...about twice the price for a full day's accompanied instruction, mainly road but 1hr on-track. IIRC can be taken as 2 1/2 days with prior agreement.

Id rather spend less money on all day open pit lane at oulton pk I know I'm getting more than six laps there.
My understanding is that you get 1 hour of 1-2-1 instruction on track, and you then get 6 timed laps, which adds up to quite a lot of driving.

I'm with Ted on this one - it's actually pretty good value. thumbup
