Castration with a rusty spoon is too good for them. You can bet the're now investing vast sums of our money coming up with another motorist crucifying scheme which generates a tax rate for every vehicle pre dating 2001. Next thing we know ~ Tax for 20th century cars will be directly linked to emissions results from the MOT or something similar. Tw@ts

The budget was in march ffs! Why is everyone complaining now?
Because a lot of idiots didn't twig it would affect them, i was talking to a mate yesterday moaning about fuel prices and tax and i mentioned that my tax will be going up to £300ish from his reaction it must have been the first he had heard of that change in relation to older cars. Darling pulled a seriously dodgy move and made it retrospective which it so unusual that unless you paid attention you would assume that it was business as usual and that the tax would only apply to newly registered cars in the way that it has always done before.

Obviously ministerial jags are exempt, and for MPs who have cars being hit by increases they no doubt can get it back on expenses. Perhaps Prince Philip should invite the cabinet on a pheasant shoot with Wills and Harry, but just forget to mention they are the targets. Why not just get Gordon to tax anything that has wheels out of the reach of everyone, and then introduce tax, VAT and duty on any shoes which have not been hand crafted out of our buttock skin. Vote them out or lets all just move to Oz or Poland

Eh, that was obvious.

Did people really think they'd not be covered by these rules on post March 2001 cars?

I think if you read Jeremy Clarkson's article in Topgear magazine this month it once again shows why he should be PM. He says buy a car past 1973 and modify it. As long as the chassis number remains with the log book you can do whatever you want with it and not have to pay any tax.
That's what I've got.

Works out very nicely too!
Why past 1973? If it's before 1973 (eg Dec 72 or earlier) you pay no road tax at all - its Exempt scratchchin

Is this REALLY breaking news? confused

I mean, It was in the budget! wink

I for one knew all about it, I even used a table printed in The Times at the time to work out the increase on my partners 1.8 MX5. rolleyes

Which incidentally is increasing to the ludicrous sum of an annual £310 for road tax! eekcurse

I've got a 96 Griff and a 93 Volvo... fk 'em, they won't be getting replaced by anything newer than 2000 for a very long time.

Do we think this is going to increase the value of barge bargains?

I thought it was common knowledge that post March 01 cars would be subject to new tax rates. I've read it in Evo and Parkers.co.uk. Not saying that I agree with it mind. Example - you can buy a 00MY Clio 172 and pay something like £210 a year in tax or if you've bought a 01MY Clio 172 you pay £270 or so. Same car, same engine, same CO2...
My (first shape) 172 is Aug 01. So i'll get fleeced for another £60 then.

Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling can go a stick it up there arses. It makes me so mad, espically since every illigal immigrant cost the country 20k in the first 12months of arriving in the uk. Did they forget to mention that to everyone??? I think so. You would not believe what happens at the sharp end of the wedge. So bloody sick of being taxed to buggery for working hard and trying to earn a living....

All a bunch of <unts!

Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

I can't even buy a honda CTR because of the inordinate amount of tax i have to pay.

i wouldnt have a problem with the tax hike if there was a benefit for me to paying more tax but there is absolutly none. if the roads where better, or more police, or better ambulance staff.
