your an idiot, think before you post something like that in the future branding all jap cars as chav, you obviously know nothing about cars
Not all Japanese cars, but certainly the ones like Subaru or Evo, or the ones with massive rediculous spoilers and sticky bits on them, what, you recon an Evo has class?

and "better cars out there", better for who? you are talking about faster, not better, and being faster certainly doesnt make a car better.

What makes a Subaru better than an Audi? rarity? nope, resale value? nope, quality? nope, interior and what you get for your money? nope, looks? nope, gee, it goes faster, big deal, we dont live on a racetrack, the milliseconds faster it goes than the Audi makes no difference in real world driving, would prefer the comfort.

...I assume it still has the slow reacting "cheap Quattro" Haldex which badly let the car down (I ran an old shape S3 for 2 years and sold it as I was sick of the poor cornering grip). Yes traction was good but by the time you can use it you have missed the apex anyway because of all that understeer. Of course, driven at 7/10th it's fine, but why not buy a diesel then.
The 8P S3s (2006>) have completely different haldex system compared to the earlier 8L S3s, they're far more complex and quicker reacting, the newest S3s have even more changes to make them faster reacting.

I've no idea how people can say the latest model is useless, just because they thought that about a model that came out 10 years ago.

Subaru did do a de-chaved version of the Impreza called the spec-D. It still had the ugly bonnet scoop though - not much choice as long as they stick with the top-mounted intercooler.

I think its an age thing to be honest, Im getting on a bit, in my twenties I appreciated cars like Subarus, in my thirties I want something that has some class and quality.

The rally reps never appealed to me. I can see why someone would want one, nothing else really offers as much performance for the money, but I just don't like the way they drive.

Im impressed to see the reduction in CO2 to 193g per km! The one I drive is 217g. Still a very impressive car, rare to see on the roads, not as common as the R32 and a much more classier interior, with much more attention to detail than the current R32. Worth it in every sense. Not sure if I'll rush and buy an S Tronic gearbox though!

Definitely give the S-Tronic box a change, I ahd one on an A3 and found it to be superb. Changes very quickly and the box is versatile enough to incorporate easily to any driving conditions.

Im done with egar changing thou, its a pain, much prefer a superb box like this to do the work for me, and quicker too, especially when the roads are busy.

Does very well when pushing on a bit too, and is the one id have if I could afford an S3.

And when its out of warranty and goes wrong - my god take cover when the bill winds its way to you.

Why is everything getting so needlessly complicated?

Save CO2 and walk to the newsagents once in a while!!

Whilst I agree, it's only fair to point out the number of times this has been said in the past.

Fuel injection; electronic ignition; synchromeshes; electric windows;... I suspect it was said, with justification, about the first motorcars - FAR more complicated than a Horse and Carriage.

A friend on mine has just picked up a '58 S3 SB, lovely car, worth the money IMO, the S-Tronic wil be a great addition to the car, so well built and ooozes quality.

Makes me laugh at the comparison with an EVO etc, the S3 is a quality car, Jap cars ( I have had 2 Impreza's) are not. I would bet on the audi being cheaper to run as well.

Good discounts to be had on them at the moment which makes them more attractive.

I picked up my 58 S3 Sportback 3 weeks ago and it's a great allround car...
I said before i have had Jap's,Italian's and German cars with some French thrown in as well, but keep comming back to the German's for the allround car.
End of the day we all like different cars and i'll not get another Jap car ,but others will for there own reasons.

I'd rather be sitting in an S3/high end Audi interior than hmmm any other car TBH. The interiors are just fantastic to look at and be in.

Well, I have also driven the current one (pre facelift). It felt very understeery and the Haldex was slow to react compared to a Torsen set up for instance. They may have made the Haldex a bit quicker (so the Marketing says) but it's not saying much ; however hard they try, it will always be sluggish (because there is no central diff). Now the problem is that the car is even heavier than the previous generation which has wiped out any improvements dynamically, for me anyway. So, you would have thought the improvement would be greater in 10 years...
It still is fantastically built, presented, etc etc. I am sure it does the job as a quick and refined hatch but the gap compared to a Japanese 4wd is huge dynamically, at least at 9/10th (which is about 7/10th on a Jap 4wd). Each to their own.
Hope this clarifies it for you.

Well I had the luxury to be able to choose a company car recently and drove the S3 manual, but after I tried a BMW 330i coupé, there was no comparison. The 335i was out of my reach (I had to buy new), but come on, anyone who pays 30K for a Audi badged Golf (or Seat) rather than a 1 yr old 335i must be lala.

Good first post. For some people the badge is crucial as they see the car as a lifestyle/wealth/taste statement(they usually look nothing like the image they are trying to project). Audi are VERY VERY clever at exploiting those needs. Others hate brands because of the image that their drivers are projecting (typically BMW).
For other people, it's the driving experience that counts first ad couldn't care what the car "says about them". Those rarely drive an Audi.

Or they just want a hatchback, not something bigger, like a 3-series.

I agree, a 330 or 335 (i or D) would be a more fun driver's car, but it isn't in the same category as an S3 is it? They're competing with the A4 (and have it firmly beaten into the ground).

1-series 3-door 130i M-SPORT is less than £27K list...

Driven it too and makes the S3 feels like a "pipe and sleepers" car. Honnestly. The steering alone makes it a no contest.

I drove this also and the car was fantastic, sounded great (I even think it looks OK). Just no room in the back for the lil'uns.
