Try a Volkswagon Phaeton.

A Bentley in the wrong clothes....and one hell of a bargain at the moment.
Not a Phaeton I know (which I have a lot of respect for) but I have the use of a Flying Spur this coming weekend. It's been a while since I have steered a luxury car so I am really looking forward to seeing if it lives up to my high expectations.

No doubt someone will come along soon and tell me it's not a real Bentley smile
Enjoy biggrin

Friend of my old man had one, a beautiful car.

Is the one your 'borrowing' Autocar's long termer? If so, did you have to crowbar Mr Cropley from behind the wheel? wink

XJ12 series 3. Surely that has to win
+1

Only problem with the XJ12 was it was so quiet, if you farted the leather would ripple and everyone would know you did it, but good god its quick. I can only wonder what it would be like if it wasn't saddled with a 3sp gearbox.

Bentley Brooklands (Old one) - I WILL own a mulsanne bodied Bentley, just a fantastic car. You never want to go back to a pleb wagon ever again.

Bristol Blenheim - So deliciously oddball, built like no other car, never driven one but been a passenger. Just magical. But a bit severe near £200k price tag, but worth every penny IMO.
I have always loved those old Jag XJ's cloud9
Had I not owned a Roll Royce I would deffo have said the XJ. However, as my daily driver is my Roll Royce Silver Shadow 2, I can hand on heart tell you that the Rolls has the jag beat. And if anyone says its not a practical car so it doesn't count hasn't ran one day to day. I've driven all the others (BMW, Mercs, Lexus, etc.) and they are nowhere close. Rolls rule. God save the Queen smile

This is the silver Shadow II model, is it?

If so, I have driven a borrowed one of these and they are lovely!

Great "proper" Rolly Royce shape to me.

Close, but no cigar...

XJ40 has the best ride of any Jag, just don't show it any corners. hehe

Yeah, those XJR 18" Penta's are like goldust. Worth half the rest of the car on their own!

Sssshhhh! wink

I was thinking of you earlier whilst posting on this thread and had that very photo of your car and your good self in mind.

I know I said I am not so keen on the XJ40 but that colour suits it so well, really nice!

What I really did hate was the rectangular headlights on the early ones, yours would have had the double headlights I think and looked so much better.

I do prefer the XJ40 dash to the later X300 one, much more in keeping IMHO.

Bmw 840 Sport which I just bought, bizzarly quiet with absoloutely no sensation of the speed your doing. (which could lead to trouble!)
I'll second that, 80mph at 2000 revs and it's almost silent with it.

Any 7 series, the big Lexus, Audi A8, and my personal favourite, S classes, more specificallt the S65. I think the RR Phantom is more of a passengers car.

I'd argue that a standard S500 on small wheels would be more refined than the firmly suspended, big wheeled AMG version, but that's just IMHO.

Yep, thats the one. Mines in 'pewter' rather than two tone green. I imported it from the UK to the US - it literally stops traffic. I've had people almost drive into the car while taking photos on their mobile phones.

Ha ha, my reputation (and attire) preceed me!

Mine did indeed have the square headlights which were on all the Jaguar and Daimler (XJ40) Sovereign models and I think on the early (XJ40) XJ12s too. Personally I think they suit the more angular shape of the car better than the round headlights which IMHO suffer from round peg into square hole syndrome.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that although the X300 is a beautiful car, I do regard it as the point where Jaguar lost their way styling wise and sought comfort in retro-land. At least the XJ40 brought the classic XJ profile up-to-date with the angular 80's - all be it about five years too late.

Dashboard wise I think the only difference between the '40 and the '300 was the instrument panel (wood on the '40 and plastic on the '300). Otherwise they were the same, although the Daimler models did benefit from more wood & metal and less plastic.

For 'lack of bangs' per buck this has to be the winner.

Great car.

No idea about the quote I'm afraid.

That hat is linked to the 'how cool would a 22 year old look with a Jaguar XJ6' thread, as it shows that exact result. My 23rd birthday present from my best mate being the 'old mans' hat.

I think it's fair to say that it irked him somewhat that (as you say) it suited me!

To be fair, everything suited me better back then when I was merely a shadow of my current self...frown
