What is the 0-60 of the 335d - around 6 seconds? That's not bad for a diesel at the end of the day..

Joining the M3/335d debate, I would want an M3 everyday of the week. Having owned a 335d I know it is an awesome, very cabable and quick car but it lacks the sound of a petrol, a manual box and the handling of an M car.
If you want a quick car and do loads of miles a year, look at getting a 335d which will return 35-40mpg and put a smile on your face. If you you love cars for handling and performance get an M3.

Now stop comparing the two!

Here are some times BMW Car Magazine recorded when testing the petrol v's diesel 335's. These are times for standard cars(not re-mapped)

0-60:
335i - 5.6
335d - 5.6

0-100
335i - 13.6
335d - 13.3

Lap of Bruntingthorpe track: Petrol= 1.22.8 Diesel= 1.22.7

E90 M3 round same track = 1.20.3

So ideal for the gheys then? tongue out

I think the 335d is an impressive car in its own right. The only thing that's brought comparisons to the M3 are 335d drivers who have a chip on the shoulder (some of whom have had them remapped) and in particular one internet hero. The M3 is a completely different car as it's designed for a completely different purpose; even the Alpina B3 (essentially a tuned 335i) is supposed to be a completely different kettle of fish to an M3.

The trouble is that everyone on these forums is weary of the comparisons by aforementioned fanboys. If most people on here (even M3 drivers) had an opportunity to drive a 335d in standard or remapped form they'd probably be impressed. The fact that fanboys go on about it actually makes people just ignore the car altogether!

The ones I feel sorry for are the normal 335d owners (whether remapped or not) who usually poke their head above the parapet in the middle of an forum battle and assert that the 335d is pretty good; not "THE MESSIAH" that the fanboys claim, but pretty bloody good- they will at that point get it with both barrels from everyone else. I notice none of these have popped up on this thread- they know better by now.hehe

Probably the reason why there are quite a few ex-335d owners now also, the stigma attached to the car became embarrassing.

I don't know which is more annoying.

Listening to tales of straight line victories between differing BMWs or that bloody expression "owned" and its derivatives.

For what it's worth, in the the porker the only guys who 'get up my arse' on the motorways with a view to initiating a drag race are the oil burners. The only exception to date has been an Evo 9 - but then we had an understanding..... biggrin

Some of these cars are genuinely rapid in a straight line but I'm not really sure why the dervs always think they have a point to prove...... Good luck if you'd prefer a 335d, they're great cars - but really, i'm not going to cry in my cornflakes just because you can keep up with me.

In the M3 the problem was even worse. Every tom, dick & harry wants to have a pop at you. The M3 needs a proper rev'ing to get the best out of it too, so it's quite possible to get easily wrong footed.

And to the guy in the A3 1.9TDI who overtook me in a 30 on Sunday as i sat behind an old Land Rover - you are a complete knob!

Yup, but a slight miss changing gear, or on the throttle, and that is that run ruined.. Completely. Drag racing is so dependent on the driver that most of these video's are utterly meaningless. Circuits, on the other hand, forgive slight errors a bit more, so you get a much better view of the car.

Who's "we"?

Are you a motoring journalist?

Was it a scientific test, or did you just overtake a fat German businessman who was on the 'phone?

The Porsche was full to the rafters with minge, thus slowing it down, the (mapped) BMW only had to transport a copy of Razzle and was therefore much lighter....

I was the passenger in the 335d with 2 other friends in the porsche and up to 160 mph the porsche could not catch it
