A2s are brilliant fun, i had a 1.4 as my first car and did nigh on 100K miles in it.

Please. You need to get out more.jester
It does weigh about 250-300 kgs less than your average current supermini...
I do get out a lot ( thanks for your concern ), and most of it is A and B road driving, and the A2 is every bit as quick as the OH's 120D sport. Which in turn is quicker across country than my old M5 ever was.

The A2's ability to carry speed ( a concept lost on TVR drivers jester ) is stunning. It just GRIPS and GRIPS and GRIPS.

Hi,

Lets just say that when Audi replaced their CEO a few years ago, the first thing the guy did in his new job - the very first thing - was to cancel the A2.

It was unpopular, over priced, not the easiest thing to service or work on (expensive garage bills), and the competition was better.

Personally, I'd look at a new Panda if you want something frugal and even, dare I say it, good to drive. You can pick up a new 1.2 Panda for the £5k mark that does 50mpg. The 1.3 diesel is about 7.5k with options and pulls around 60mpg (probably more when my sister's is broken in a bit).

It`s unpopularity was caused by the high price to be honest. I`m sure most customers didn`t even drive it due to it`s high price. They probably bought a Golf instead.

Dear Pistonheads, you didn't give me the right answer to my original thread, so I've made an alternative profile, and replied in the original thread as my alternate persona just to hammer home that fact. Look at me!
hi this is Matt - The mrs is clearly trying to justify her reasons for buying an A2 and I am SO PLEASED that you have all warned her against it!!!! Thank you PH!

I had a 1.4tdi sport, it was the big one with a mighty 90ps!!!

Don't bother, for a start it is an Audi and they are all pretty boring, but the A2 really does take dull to a whole new level.

For a start it was not that comfy, the interior is now pretty dated, the pedals are funny heights so you get cramp and worst of all the economy (which is the reason you buy one) was awful, I struggled to get over 40mpg in mine.

It lasted about 2 months.

Plus you have funky things like the Mini, Fiat 500, and even the Toyota iGo now that do the job far better.

My name is also Matt, and I like A2s....

Seriously, I've been driving a 1.4TDi SE a fair bit recently and think it's superb. Solid, well equipped, economical, roomy, dirt cheap tax, handles reasonably well, and has a characterful little engine.

The order of those factors may expose the kind of car it is but in its defence it never pretends otherwise. I'd much rather tool around in an A2 than any other supermini/city car I can think of.

I'll second the Panda, great little car. Probably not quite as well built as an A2, although like most modern Fiats they are put together properly now. The 1.3 Multijet gives amazing economy, my mate has a 500 with the same engine and hit 73mpg on a motorway run the other week, still gets quite a lot through town. But the Panda has back doors (cue mandatory PH jokes about kicking them in) and more space in the back and boot. If you're happy with 40ish mpg, get the 100hp. Doesn't sound like much power, but it weighs about the same as a paracetamol tablet, so it's quite fast. Just make sure you don't get one with ESP fitted, IIRC if it was added at the factory you can't turn it off frown Safer for the OH but if you fancy spending the day pretending you're 18 again, then its about as pointless as fitting a condom machine to the roof.

So, to summarise.

The A2 is built like a tank and weighs 300kg less than a supermini.

The 75hp one is faster than an M5.

They didn't sell well, and went out of production.

Thats cleared that up, then scratchchin

My Wife has had an A2 1.6 SE for about 2 months, we chose it as it has 4 doors for the children and is a bit different from the normal small car.

I would not have one as our only car, but as a second car I cannot think of a better choice. It is very well made and is well equipped for a small car, it has 6 cd changer, climate control and bose. It does not feel like it has been built to a price.

The ride is not bad on 16" wheels, but can be a bit crashy if you hit a bump at motorway speeds. I can see why they stopped selling it, the original invoice we have is for £19k and I believe even at this money Audi still made a loss.

I can see it becoming a bit of a classic, one of the first aluminium cars, economical, weighs around 900KG,

The price of progress I'm afraid... I love my 968 dearly but I'm not going to get into a traffic light drag race with a current golf tdi because I'll make myself look like an arse. Around the track I'd kick it's arse, but even on high speed twisties I'd imagine that the golf wouldnt be far behind me.
So... yes call me mad for daring to compare the performance of a modern BMW deisel against an E28 and E34 M5. The reality os there is no comparison, the new stuff is just better.

I owned an A2 around 2002 time. Worst mistake of my life. Bought brand new from my local Audi dealer it went back on numerous occasions to have problems looked at, although one was not the cars fault but the dealer left the suspension blocks in, despite the PDI inspection sheet showing they had been removed and the mechanic taking 3 attempts to believe us when we said the suspension was rock hard. Eventually the dealer agreed to a replacement A2 but this turned out to have different problems so I was very glad to get shot of the thing. My first and last Audi experience.

However I bought the car because I liked it - it was different to most cars on the road at the time and it was a shame the quality of the product and service didn't live up to Audi's reputation. Generally they seem to be an OK car with plenty of room for the size of the thing and you can take the rear seats out to make a bit of room in the back. Performance was ok for a 1.4 petrol as it is light. Some models are only 4 seaters though IIRC.

Drawbacks are that it is expensive to repair body damage, when it rains the noise is a lot worse due to the thin roof and when the wiper is going the car will rock from side to side (only slightly but I felt it).

I like the A2 as well.

Mate of mine had both an A4 and A2 and he liked driving the A2 just as much as his A4.

Do you need a special tool to open the bonnet?

The top ups are all done via the front grille and pop out funnels aren't they?

This is the only feature I don't like.

i have run 2 Audi A2's in the past and loved them both.

As town supermini's they are briliant, the derv can be chipped nicely, they have a very clever interior design with the fully removable rear seats etc and are also very comfy.

The only issue i ever had with mine was Audi main dealers, but the A2 is now old enough that you would be going to independants so less issue there.

Would recomend getting the Glass roof option
