Shedding isn't about spending £1000 so you can spend ANOTHER £1000 - that's what mugs and idiots do.
What you do is choose something which doesn't NEED £1000 spending on it. You buy a car which has a recent-ish cambelt and doesn't need anything obvious.
Everything else is a gamble - you don't spend £100s on preventative maintenance on a SHED - that's entering cherished car/restoration and it's mugs game at this price level.
As I pointed out on an earlier shed when someone bemoaned spending a fortune on his £1K shed before selling it - the only problem was he bought the car 1 owner too early
p.s. auto-electrician mate of mine spent eons under the bonnet of one of these recently - eventual solution was the replacement of something quite cheap which had corroded away BUT it took 3 weeks for the part to arrive. So it's less about parts cost and more about having someone who knows what they're doing (less labour) and patience/another car to use meanwhile!!

That was from two owners and a performance car specialist so i'd be inclined to agree with them.
You are so right. This is the only car I ever got caught out with from an auction. Turbo Auto drove through the auction hall ok, but when I went to drive it home the gearbox was knackered. I let loose on the auction centre but all they would do was re-entre it into the auction on my behalf. Because of the gear-box problem, I lost £400 but at the time I was relieved to get shot. This was 10 years ago. Always drive these things well before you part with £££££££ It is also flaming expensive to rectify.

You sure it was a twin turbo? Mitsubishi never did a twin turbo automatic because the box got all hot and bothered. The only factory-built autos were the non-turbos.GTO Scott said:

It can be done - but the standard ATF cooler is crap, and its heat that kills the GTO auto-box. That and running it on 100,000 mile old ATF. Fit a decent oil cooler and a few alterations in the valve body and the box should take stock twin turbo power without issue. Some of the American drag-spec 3000GT's run heavily modified autoboxes with well over 800bhp.Sheep in Wolf's clothing, slow and thirsty, would get blitzed by a warm hatch I suspect, still an interesting motor for a grand and I kind of like it as it has that eighties Technic Lego kit car thing about it, all gizmos and gimmicks, looks quite good really, buy it run it till it breaks then break it for spares, I cant imagine stuff like bonnets are easy to come by for stuff like this so potentially you could recoup more as parts.

Actually, you'd struggle to sell a Mk.1 bonnet for much more than £10. Parts are easy to get for these, plenty being broken for spares.Does anyone know why these cars had some plastic bulges tacked on to the bonnet? also why do they have fake windows on the side (the black panel dressed up to look like a window).. just some tacky little touches that spoil an otherwise nice shape.. just never could understand what the plastic tat on the bonnet was (were definitley not vents)
