I avoided BMWs for ages partly because I couldn't afford a decent one but mostly because of the bad image.
But image aside, they are mostly great cars with only a few howlers in the model line up.

Interestingly, just to slightly dispel this "the old ones were the best" thing, my dad's brand new E20 323i blew up at 18 months old. A rather sheepish BMW sorted it but it was a big headache. The engine literally fell apart.

I find those that know nothing about cars like BMWs, those that know a bit and don't own one utterly hate them, those that know a fair bit generally like them, those that know a bit but are loaded look down on them.

The only time I get any trouble on the road, irrespective of the car I am driving, is when I do something that probably deserves it.

On the few occasions someone has bothered to ask about my car, if I mention a BMW they usually say something like nice car.
Same here.

There's a junction I encounter in the morning rush hour which you simply have to rely on someone letting you out to negotiate. Never had an issue in the BMW.

When I first got mine, I had some light hearted comments from a handful of friends about indicators and lane 3 of the motorway, but it was just that. Banter. I can't say I've had any nasty stuff.

I do encounter the odd dick on the road, but no more so than when driving the Golf or the Alfa.

Once the geometry is set and we dial in some negative camber, it should be just about OK. I know the wheels won't be to everyone's taste but it's got over 300 brake, so needed a bit more rubber than the stock rims would allow.

I'm fortunate enough that E21 are cheap enough for me to have a wide arch version for track duty though. wink

Thanks. Just waiting for photobucket to update and stop hiding pics. Hopefully there's some updates later today too. smile

I worked with a chap who loved BMWs, couldn't say enough good things about them. I once got talking to him about them and it turns out he bought a brand new M3, and had so many problems with it they built him a new one in the factory at no charge.

Impressive customer service, however I would be more impressed if it did not go wrong in the first place rolleyes

Having said that I was looking at a BMW M3 convertible on Autotrader today, £5.5K. similar acceleration to an XJR, mighty tempting scratchchin

Please someone stop me going to the Dark Side redcard lol

Yet you failed to tell this tale when you were mentioning how much you disliked BMW's in previous discussions.

Didn't seem relevant at the time, however on a thread about how reliable BMWs are seems more on topic.

If I had to mention everything I know and have experienced about cars I would be here all year writing the motoring version of war and peace smile

Oh and by the way, with respect there is no need to use quote when referring to the post above.

Thanks for the insight into PistonHeads etiquette, I had no idea after being here for so long.

Cheers for the heads up hehe

It's safer though. While you're typing a reply such as 'I do that as well', someone else could have added a post about how they love cottaging in laybys.

I hear the factory is where they build them best.

So where did they build his first one then, in a layby perhaps? smile

With the standard of paintwork on some of the newer BMWs probably and with rattle cans! wink

Another one here for never having encountered negative reaction from driving BMWs.

Have had many over the years, an E30 316i Coupé, E46 330Ci M Sport Convertible, E60 525SE, and current E82 135i Coupé.

No negative comments in the slightest from friends, family, acquaintances or colleagues. Only the odd positive comment.

People are as polite to me on the road as they are toward me in just about any other car I've driven.

The only car I've owned where there was a noticeable difference in the way I was treated on the road was in a MINI Cooper S R56 I ran for 18 months. Something about being in a small car - I was tailgated fairly often - people just seemed desparate to get past or around me. Like I was some insect that needed to be swatted out of the way. Really quite bizarre.
