As a sprog carrier for the nanny that is run into the ground then disposed of I can see the appeal. However, given that its pre-registered, you wouldn't get the 'lifetime warranty' which takes the shine off the turd somewhat.

Plus you would have to deal with Arnold Clark.

I do love my volvos but there are better than that out there for about half again - hmmmmm

keep looking at this as well - a bit over thread budget but looks very shiny!

Calling all shedding beards........

I'm having a change of heart and looking for a new motor in BB terrority (may even a little above - say up to 2k)

I want a 4x seater cabrio, but trying to get something that could be/looks like an appreciating, considered choice rather than a total turd. I know trying to get as original as possible is key to this!
Dpn't care what engine, what fuel, what colour - just 4x seats, soft top and auto.

My shortlist is quite short after a good look around the usual sites - so what do i need to be checking on the following?

E36 Cab - 323 or 328
CLK 200,230,320 (W201) - Rust, rust and rust i know
Saab 93 - either late 02/03 plate or newer shape
Audi A4 (if I can find one in the price range)
How about going a bit older and look at E30s or even a Bauer, get an originalish one and you wont lose money.

Or totally leftfield,a bit st, but I luike them for some reason, a Buick LeSabre?

Right chaps - I've been relocated for work and am now faced with 750 miles a week of driving so need a bargain barge.

Must be big (I'm 6ft 5) so need space and needs to do around 40mpg. Max budget £1k. My searches have turned these up;

The first Citroen or maybe the Passat, but I wonder if it has been pranged and repaired because the VW badge is missing from the grille.
The first Citroen could be a bargain on the face of it.

It's had a different grill fitted to change the look, the badge isn't missing since the roundel it would fit on also isn't there.

I am biased, having owned one, but the Audi would be my choice. I had a 'N' reg 1.9Tdi 110. On the motorway it was easily doing 55mpg, handled OK for a daily snotter, build quality was good for its age, no creaks or rattles.
I bought mine with about 130k on it and ran it until about 190k. The only things that went were the thermostat (easy job) and the two front wheel bearings. Other than that it just plugged away...truth be told I didn't even give it an oil change smile

They are pretty bullet proof - I'd imagine the 90bhp to be a bit lethargic, but if your main commute is motorway once you're upto speed you won't notice or care!

The VAG 1.9's of this era are regarded as a fantastic engine. Not the last word in refinement as they are a bit agricultural, which is mainly due to its direct injection and thus more knock. The plus of this is because its not common rail there's less to go wrong, and if it does go wrong it'll be a cheaper fix. That said, any Tdi has the ability to spit a turbo when it wants to.

Would tend to agree, they are nice enough and pretty reliable. The 2.0HDi in the Citron is well known for going forever too.

Well here we go.

It needs a wheel alignment as its pulling a little, and a good service. Its also running cool, so needs a thermostat. Oil + filter, Air filter, plugs and thermostat all purchased for £50, will be done at the weekend. Other than that, a bulb for the clock (£1!), and a really good clean, its great! It doesn't show in the photos but the wheels look pretty grotty, I might have them off and rub em down and paint one at a time if I feel the need. But that's kind of missing the point. Not a jot of rust on the body, lots of scratches and stains etc, typical old dodderers car, but there major trauma or clangers and it cleans up ok.

For some reason I expected it to be quite a firm ride but its very plush and comfortable (or am I just used to small sports cars). No knocks or bangs, has new pads all round so brakes are not so keen but ill reserve judgement for a few hundred miles. Pulls really well (its got a lot more torque than I expected), and despite the low gearing its perfectly adequate on the motorway with the radio on. Its got working AC, an electric sunroof, electric windows all round, I've put my decent headunit in, a load cover, half leather. The boot is not enormous but very square and the seats go flat, so its very usefully sized. Already earning its keep with tip runs and gardening duties.

Why spend more!
Ive had a 1.4 saloon and a 1.6 Aeroduck in the last few years and had zero issues with them, both under £1200 notes each, first had 25k second 65k. Then bought an HRV thats had to have rings and bearings shattering my "Hondas are bulletproof" beliefs!

Ive got a set of these wheels at the workshop that I gave a quick refurb, foolishly I didnt check the PCD and to my cost realised the 1.6 had a different stud pattern to the 1.8.... DUH!

I wouldn't buy the Aeroduck variant. Huge bills with those.

That'swan of the wisest bits of advice out there. Especially if you get one that's been goosed. Sea, gullible people might crow on about practicality, but I personally find the hatch to be far more pheasant pleasant.

Can we get back onto the more pressing matter of bargain basement motoring?

Great.

Otherwise I'll have to Ducktape™ your mouths and fingers.
