Because a decent 1984 MG Metro is worth about £3,000+

They're easy to steal and thanks to this pillock easy to ring. rolleyes

66 GTO lights...

Yamaha Fazer headstock and log book...

Triumph Vitesse.

A very sore point having bought a previously stolen one myself. frown

BMW R1100 GS Chassis plate off cut and log book.

The last one is a trader who should know better so feel free to report that one as much as possible.

Nice to see a majority of those already binned by eBay before I got chance to report them. Other two done though [Imp and BMW GS]

A polite message via eBay with a link to this thread and it's finally been removed; by the seller rather than eBay. I wonder if eBay are aware that every stolen car with an identity bought via their auction site also makes them accessories the "Theft of a Motor Vehicle".

The GS is still listed - I've reported it too.

You'll note the Imp listing has been edited to say the complete shell is now included.

Please don't link 'offenders' to this thread, it gives them access to target the proactive members.

I had one of the sellers of a Mk1 Escort harrassing me by looking through my old posts, linking to pictures I'd hosted in my Photobucket account, then putting pics of my old cars up for sale on eBay with blatent "V5C logbook" tags in the title so I'd find them, and writing intimidating text in the listing like "Rearview mirror is not available, I'll need that to see who is following me home".

I wouldn't send a link to anyone who came across as deliberately doing it. I had a poke around the guys sale history and thought he was one of the ones listing the VIN plate and log book without realising he was potentially breaking the law.

Some people simply do not know that such an innocent thing as a piece of paper and 4x8cm plate can cause absolute misery to others.

But...

Edited to add. If anyone has a problem with this thread or the moral stance it represents as the OP I will be more than happy to have you car stolen and its identity changed so you will never see it again. Just so you know how it feels.

Why do they always put LOADS of whitespace on the auctions too?? It's something I've noticed in common with a lot of these V5 auctions

Ignore that, it seems like chrome was having a fit...

Hi all,

Sorry for being a dumbass but could anyone confirm ;

1) Why would you legitimately want a logbook and chassis number?

2) if these are just used for ringing, why isn't it illegal to sell and therefore these sellers being prosecuted for some kind of accessory to crime or something?

Ta!!

1/ There isn't one unless you some kind of collector but then you it's still an offence to not declare a vehicle as scrapped.

2/ It is only a criminal offence if the identity is used to change the identity of a stolen vehicle; Accessory to the theft of a motor vehicle, or change the identity of a vehicle to increase the value of the vehicle; Accessory to fraud.

Whilst not really having any relevance to this thread, I don't believe any insurance policy, short-term or otherwise, has a clause which forbids it to be used in releasing a seized vehicle from a Police impound yard. The vehicle only needs to be insured at the time of release to be legal, this could be covered by a single day term policy?
