It's going for a service in a few weeks, so will get it checked out then. It was given a thorough going over 6k miles ago to recommission it including HG, wiring loom and loads of service stuff. Here's hoping that they missed something.

The car will have to stay regardless, as I doubt anyone will give me anything near the £5k it owes me! Think I will complete the work (cosmetic stuff) and just try to aquire a vehicle through work to use it less.

Hmm yes, and looks nice and 'useable' without having to be too over precious about it?
What is that worth? Seeing as 107 prices seem to be climbing fast.
It made £7105 last time it was ebay'd as an auction, and the buy it now was £8995.

£2,495 - it's only a 300, but the fuzzy photos look nice enough. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C521789

That does look nice. These cars have really grown on me. Could be next on the list (well, 'next' after a 129!)

In other news, I am braving the remnants of Hurricane Bertha and taking my youngest daughter camping in the New Forest for a few days. If you never hear from me again, we got washed-away!

Shimmy should have been sorted with a premium priced car like this. It was on my 2.5K diesel touring at significantly less than purchase price 18 months ago. I hope he paid nothing like asking price.

Likely to be control arms plus fitting which has to be 250 quid if you're going to go Lemforder and someone else fitting them.

This is what I've already told him is the most likely cause (but could be a number of other things.

As you'll see in my next post, vendor would budge, my friend had taken a day aside to go all the way to Southampton and he would have walked had it not been for the advice of another friend of his who went with him.
i have seen the service history and its crap. Car has only ever have one insp2 and that was in 07..
Right, just back from going over to my mate's to see the car.

fk it's rough! None of it insurmountable...but it's rough.

It'll need at least another £Grand and a whole heap of effort to bring up to anywhere near presentable (even then far from 'perfect') and nothing like the seller's description at all.

Doesn't look like a 39K mile car but strangely all the consecutive MOTs seem to stack and support that mileage?

Had a short drive of it. Seems to go ok and I couldn't get it to show the shimmy that my friend experienced. Pulling left to what felt like varying degrees...I'm thinking sticky caliper.

He's only bought it to drive with another friend on a holiday to Spain in the next few weeks. Don't know what he'll do with it thereafter.

Could be ok. Got the feeling from the history the seller sent me that although it hasnt done much mileage the last few owners havent loved it or spent the money keeping it tip top. Might have been better value at 2k, but at 3 plus another grand, not good...

No rust but if you wanted it "perfect" you'd be looking at a complete respray.

To make it "presentable" you're looking pretty much the whole nearside below the waist, front bumper, offside rear arch has a really bad scuff/gouge at least. Micro-blistering on the bits on the sides over the doors.

The rest of the exterior I could probably "bring back" for him with a couple of days detailing with all the black rubber and plastic trims off and re-dyed.

All the front screen rubbers have perished and almost falling apart; black window trims bubbling, wiper-arms need removing and refinishing.

The wheels...all 5 need complete proper refurbishing.

Needs new front headlamp covers.

The interior is minging. Wants a full day on that and the driver's seat bolster would probably improve with a light "wash" re-dye with some black Scuffmaster.

Pixels are badly out on the dash OBC display.

On the plus side:

It does have 4 new looking Dunlops all round (plus an unused Conti in the boot).

The Aircon DOES work despite what my friend thought and is actually very cold.

Looks like it has had a recent radiator and water pump.

[The last two services in the book look highly dubious to me. Signed by the same bloke (fair enough) but a year apart in exactly the same pen....you can just tell it was all written at exactly the same time. And supposedly only a couple of months ago with barely any miles yet the oil is totally black, dirty air-filter and micro-filters etc.]

Sounds like it was at least a grand overpriced if not a bit more.

Exactly! I think the seller sounded like he had a much higher opinion of the car than it currently deserved.

Also sounds like your friend is an idiot. Why buy it when he knows that he won't be happy with it?

I really like that on the outside; the e34 needs leather to work for me (like the W124), but then again it's very cheap for such a nice looking car. I'd buy that!

Is it on different sets of wheels in the pictures or is the one posted above just cleaner?

And 39k... really... the e39 is a pretty hardy car when it comes to miles but it sounds like this one is knackered!

I agree, it also sounds like it's done more than 39k

This is the kind of e32 I'd be interested in for £1,495. "BMW 7 SERIES 730i SE 4dr Auto 3.0 ONE PRIVATE OWNER FROM NEW" http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

I thought 8. So not too much out. I'm looking at paying 10 for same mileage but in black , with aircon and in seemingly better condition.

But if he applied that test to everything he'd have absolutely nothing in life...no cars, motorbikes, boats, vans, trucks...no house even! He's never happy with anything...even brand new things.

However, he really should have just walked on this one.

It's not that it's not do-able; it's just that there's a lot to do (and spend) and hence it should never been advertised or priced the way ot was.

In fairness to him, we proabably all know what it's like to travel a long way, having made the time and effort to do it and then to have to feel you are coming away empty handed. It's difficult to do.

If he's prepared to put up the money to turn it around, I'll help him and we'll get it sorted.

The weird thing is apart from what I think might be a sticky caliper it didn't drive badly at all (and that could happen on any car especially if not being used much). And the shimmy he encountered, I couldn't elicit. So maybe a bit of a drive has cleared that too. There were no clunks or knocks for the suspension etc and the engine sounded very nice.

It's not impossible that it is a 39K mile car (as all the sequential MOTs plus a host of BMW Maindealer bills give validity to that claim) but one that had been neglected of late.

Then it's been sold by a vendor who sounds like a total tool! Example: When my mate pointed out to him the big scrape on the offside rear wheel-arch that he'd neglected to mention in his "immaculate/mint" description, he apparently held up his excuse as: "Not me, Mate! Previous owner!"

WTF? It's on the fking car that you're selling?!

What kind of excuse is that? LOL!

I'm eyeing up a W140 S500L 1997 with 66k on the clock at a local dealer. I haven't been to see it yet but the pics looks decent enough. Apparently 2 owners from new with the same one since 2000, full Merc history etc. Dark blue with tan leather. They want £2500 for it - does that seem about right or will there be wiggle room?

Also, anything in particular to look out for on the W140?

Cheers smile
