Best Smoker Barges 1-5 large [Vol 7]
Discussion
A couple of Black E39's I saw on the trader.
Apparently Cat C only with a small bit of damage??? Unsure about that, seems dodgy. Cheap though.

I've recently seen ads for the more humble-engined variants that support the 'mollycoddled' tag, and would agree that at this age it's condition that should be the over-riding factor.
I've not driven a 4-cyl car for any longer than a test drive, but in their day they would have been perfectly adequate for family duties, and whilst I know some will disagree, I'm not at all sure that driving conditions have changed all that much in the meantime to make it a factor anyway. If anything, roads are busier and in poorer condition than ever, so there's little danger of any of these cars being unable to keep up with the traffic.
It's possibly true that some of the very smallest engines may be less fuel efficient, but fuel is not generally the greatest cost of running these old buses anyway, it's maintenance and 'betterment' that'll cost you. All of this is offset by the lack of depreciation.
For a family car, the S124 still makes a cracking choice (if you 'get it') and I'd not be deterred by a 200 if the condition and provenance of the car makes the overall trade-off worth it.

Wise words (to my mind!)
I owned an 200 TE for about 3 years. It was used a daily for family duties and to the South of France on several occasions. It was a 'Billy Basic' model with a manual gearbox, keep fit windows and no aircon and in white. One trip was to Portugal and back. I purchased it as it had very low mileage with FSH and was in very good condition. It was very reliable and a good place to be.
I actually wanted an automatic 230TE with lots of toys but this one was the best condition that I could find and I thought that was a good idea.
I really liked it - and as mentioned, if you 'get them' as a car, they really are very good. When used In the environment that they were designed for, they are excellent cars. I would have another, but to be fair I have not driven a modern equivalent.
I think I would still own it as I only sold it because I had lots of small people to transport and they found that for any long journeys sitting in the rear facing seats in the boot made them sick! Bad for them and bad for the car!
Sold it and purchased a Renault Espace - did a good job but I hated it!
Sold the Espace and am now looking for another W124 - although this time it will be a CE, cos the little people now have their own 'money pits' !

Agree.
A rare beast sadly needing some work. But, behold a mythical E39 540i Touring - manual:

Ah well the insurance are dealing with it now after the woman's partner came to my house to try to intimidate me into admitting liability. The cock.
What happened?!She calls an hour later and offers to pay for a new door. Told her 2 doors plus bumper and wing damaged. Sent her pics to prove and told her it's cheaper for her to go through insurance but to let me know if she wants me to get a quote.
Few hours later I'm feeding my ten month old when I see a man come to my door. I answer door and am asked bluntly if I want to come outside and discuss the car. Not even an introduction, what a cad!
Go outside and he claims I was going too fast based on the damage (was doing about 10mph). Then disputes liability stating his colleagues will get cctv to find out what really happened. Be my guest I replied.
Throughout his tone and body language are designed to intimidate. I tell him if he wants to dispute liability then the insurance can handle it and turn to go inside. He asks me if I've notified the police and why not saying that I'm supposed to call them. I tell him I will notify the police.
So I call my insurance, call the police (who understandably don't care about the smash) and report the berk for threatening behaviour.

What engine you after?
Gosh, was over 2 years ago now that about half a dozen of us in this thread bought 9-5s. Was a lot of dodgy Saab press at the time too. Seems that yours has served you well!

I could be open to a sneaky offer on mine at double thread budget - I'm getting an E31 itch...
Just taxed the 6er last night - 12 months for £287.50 (inc. credit card fee). Best value tax i'll pay all year!
ETA What sort of E31 - the ropey one from the other day?

I haven't decided yet. Whatever I would get for mine I'd want to split between a diesel estate for towing our van and either an E31 V8/12 or R129 500. I suspect about 4k for the derv leaving about 7
for something V8 and shiny.
"Van"? As in "Caravan"?!![hehe](/inc/images/hehe.gif)

Got it last year as we didn't fancy dragging a toddler/small child on planes all over the shop on foreign holidays. Been a massive win and although the 50i is an awesome tow car it likes a drink when you're towing! I have an itch to get back to a multi-car fleet now as well.

I'm also surprised how suddenly the supply of decent, low mileage E38s seems to have dried up? Where have they suddenly disappeared to?
Certainly not low miles but could be decent.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...
