Why do these dirty Diesels have to be so damn fast??

Went do people go on about the nose so much? Cars these days are fairly well sounds proofed. The wind and tyre noise are far more noticable in mine than the engine nose
I'm not doubting they are effective day to day but the way some are gushing implies these things should be driven flat out with the windows down so you can both enjoy the clatter and cancer inducing smell. For example my old A8 4.2 had petrol V8 and I loved to open it up on the odd occasion because it sounded nice. Cannot imagine doing the same with a diesel as it's just so unrewarding to do so. Guess we are all different.
Did yours have the Bose? That sounds bloody nice when you are booting that awesome diesel V8. Mine just happens to have engine characteristics that I prefer for the sort of driving I do.

If I really want to hear a V8 roar I take the Griff out with the roof down. Why would you hide a petrol V8 in something with a roof biggrin

What did you miss about rounding and 5400 being closer to 5k than 6k?
My pre Lci revs to 5,500 rpm on the guvenor.
Tri Turbo revs higher

Diesels that ive driven tend to run out of puff at higher RPM. No point in taking them to the red line.

My 2007 330d red lined at 5k and would rev that high. It was never worth going beyond about 4.5k though!

. . .basically in this case a resonator that makes it sound like a 7 litre old-school V8 at lower speeds.
Just no.

As someone who likes a good diesel that's embarrassing.

Nope. All diesely coughing and clattering stops by just shy of 5k

..in fact it's pointless revving it much past 4k.

To be fair an Audi SQ5 used to come in and out of a business estate where I worked.
Many times I'd look up expecting to see a Mustang V8.

Even the 2l 4pots are getting silly

Vw do a 2l Passat that makes 240bhp and 370 lbs/ft

Impressive stuff even more so when you consider you can have it as a 4wd estate

A quick fettle with a laptop sees these making 300 bhp and 425 lbs/ft

Nope peak power in my car is 4,400rpm - are you talking about many decade old diesels or very low power diesels?

But it must be true as you can watch the rpm needle sitting there under max load on the guvenor. Or is the rev counter read out incorrect? Is it incorrect on the VW golf Edition 30?

See red line starts at 5,500 rpm 535d and you can push on beyond that should you wish.
These days "rev range" is not a relevant point as many petrol now rev to the same 6k

I reckon it's all largely a pointless argument as you can do such silly things to the power and torque when you bolt a turbo onto either engine.
Go normally aspirated on two equal displacement engines, one petrol and the other diesel and it might tell a different story.
My Car has a 2.5 n/a petrol which I think is moderately quick but I'm always being overtaken by turbo diesel repmobiles. . Whip that turbo off though and I suspect they wouldn't wheeze past a well ridden tricycle...

I reckon a petrol engine would be slower if you lopped a cylinder off.
