Sweet - I rather have a full race 289 though.

Harold / Duggan - did you get to the Barley No last Sunday?

Many Cobra's.

I am likely to be there this weekend in the 6 racer (running a few new bits in).

Check this stupid replica!

"the race is the prize" ?

The fun of competing with similar cars would be the prize for me . . . What's the effing point of postman Patting cars around?
For many, the prospect of having a "competitive" car for the event is financially out of their reach. So you either sit in the low to mid field (which would frustrate the hell out of me) or you have some fun and go for the wooden spoon.
All these things are relative and the big grids at Spa are invariably several different classes competing on the same track (like Le Mans). The class splits might not be particularly obvious to outsiders (or even some of us in the race!).

Cheng's Cobra is a front-running car capable (but yet to achieve banghead ) outright victory. Spa is a very different place at the Cobra's 2:40s than at 4:00. At 2:40, you're blowing past the 3 minute cars like they're going backwards and it's hard to imagine that a 3 minute pace could be fun whilst strapped in the Cobra.

Sub 3:00 in a roadgoing Cerbera obviously feels quite quick but, relative to the Cobra, very slow. Pulling a 3:06 out of the Big Healey, slower than the Cerbera, was great fun - probably more fun than I ever expected. I'm pretty sure "Postman Patting" is exciting too and the bit of video I caught of the Morris Minor drifting out of La Source with the inside tyre smoking suggests the driver was having fun.

Those A35 can really stoke on with a Miglia engine in.

How does Cheng Cobra fit in with the other cars that do seem to be directly modified road cars built in the 60's and 70's (or to a designs that has not changed since sometime in the 70's in the case of the Morgan V8's). Surely the Cobra is just built as a racer (and is not derived from a Road Cobra). Plus the top class Moragns have 360 - 400bhp(depends who you ask Oli Bryant recons there one make 360 from a JE 4.6 all singing lump - but I gues You could get 400 out of one at a push). The Cobra with 600 - 700bhp and most likely not much more weight - well that is just even in the same league power to weight wise? I can understand maybe a 67 Chevy with one of theose lumps in it (but even that is taking the mike). And a Cobra never had a Chevy engine.

So is it just an open sports car vs sallon race or do the cars actually have to be derived from the 60/ 70's (or a continuation in the case of the Mogs?). This is the one hour I am on about not the 6 (which frankly if if you car looks about right (fia'ish - you can lob in what ever MONSTER lump you want I F YOU MUST WIN).

There are a few replicas of sorts in the one-hour. The Cobra isn't as light as you might think - and it is a road car, taxed and tested. It races on street rubber too.

I don't think you 'get' the Six Hour meeting and its support races - there are a variety of regs/invitations in play and that's part of the appeal.

You are probably right in that I don'y 'Get it', as the cars are supposed to period if not full fia (some of them are some much more developed than when those cars where raced in period it is not true). I will not be racing in 6 hour unless I win the lottery (and if I do I'll get a special 347 / 350 cu Ford close on Nascar Windsor lump in the Griff), I could not stomach some Mustang breezing past me with allegedly the same 289 spec race lump.

Planning on doing the 1 hour this year in the 6, I'll wave as you fly pastwink

Very true, a lot ot these Cobras use the same chassis, axles, tyres etc as my D-type but it's also quite depressing to have them overtake you going into a bend, then find you are back along side them as you come out of it only to see them dissapear off into the distance to the next one. frown

Of course he was having fun . . . but an "I even passed a few today"-story sounds more rewarding to me.

How's Chengs Cobra these days?

Cool

Dink should be there this year this year, in 6 (for the 1 hour). Hopefully with new motorhome. Just have to fine out if I can do 1hour on the 12gal ATL tank.

Checking with my Morgan buddies (if they can with 4.0 V8's then I should be fine). 3 min lap = 20 laps x 4.352miles = 87miles (that should be fine). Fingers crossed it make it through the season in one piece! (As the TR4 has a much smaller tank).
