My mother had a similar Talbot back in the day. It must have had a larger-than-average fuel tank. I was quite surprised when it cost over £20 to fill it! To date, that had been the highest amount I had ever paid to fill a car with petrol!http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Talbot-Alpine-1600-AUTOM...

I was running a Ford Capri MkII at the time.

We used to have a Talbot Solara (saloon Alpine - I think!) in the late 80's - a dreadful car, horrible vague thing. I think you'd have to be deranged to want to smoke around in that!http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Talbot-Alpine-1600-AUTOM...

I used to have a XJ6 3.2 Sport. Rubbish on fuel even when driving very gently, handling was dire. E39 5 series a far better buy !
If the handling was dire then there was something wrong with it. Fair enough they roll more than you might expect but you can take the most astonishing liberties with them and make very rapid and smooth progress even on piss poor roads. Rear dampers wear out sooner than you might expect though, and there are a lot of bushes to get tired and baggy. I imagine with knackered suspension it could be quite... interesting.Lifetime average of my X300 4.0 was just over 20MPG and it never, ever bettered 25MPG even on a 55MPH economy run. The 3.2 straight six is a bit weedy so you really want the 4.0.
This looks like it could be a bargain http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saab-9-5-turbo-estate-sp...
The alarm is easy to fix, and headlights are cheap.
