Use a motorbike for day to day and use the nice car as a treat, as I do.
Then I'd need a bike and associated costs plus I'd get wet :-) And I haven't been wet once on it.

The difference in fuel costs over a year between 17 and 30mpg (assuming 138p/litre + 10k miles) is about £1500. Not entirely ruinous.
Ah but I'm doing at least 60 a day Had an interesting thread relevant swapper offered at work today for a change-
2003 03 730 d sport (e65?) in silver only done 70k apparently with a black interior, had the odd small scratch here n there amd the alloys could do with a refurb, satnav in op due to no/out of date discs.
Didnt deal them but think i will tomorrow, underwritten by a trader at 4.5k, could only get one price on a sunday but seems fair?
Half tempted to buy it if it comes in but probably not as dont want a derv and didnt fancy the interior much compared to my old e38.

If only I actually needed yet another car......but not at the moment. 2003 03 730 d sport (e65?) in silver only done 70k apparently with a black interior, had the odd small scratch here n there amd the alloys could do with a refurb, satnav in op due to no/out of date discs.

Assuming 300 a week x 50 is 15k a year. Difference now is £2300, assuming that you can afford it, not necessarily ridiculous especially as you actually have to spend those 60 miles and a fair bit of time in so doing in the car.
Yes but this is coming from a car that does 42 so it just too much of an increase Trustmeimadoctor said:

What will en E39 M5 average over a mixed tank? Say 75% on motorways and A-roads.
Seem to recall 19mpg average as a figure quoted about, perhaps slightly better would be achievable over that sort of driving. Although it would seem that unless you're doing serious mileage, maintenance costs would be more of potential cause for concern than fuel bills.jonnydm said:
What is it thats returning 42? Unless its something very eco, it could mean that over a similar cycle the 740 would be doing better, say 24. The difference between those two is back down to £1600 ish. All food for thought.
Fair point. I mentioned 20mpg as a running average for a 740, but if you're doing 60 miles/day and are on a motorway for a bit of it, you'll do a lot better, and an average of mid/high 20's is not out of reach. Obviously if you've got a lot of slow-speed stuff in town, forget it.As well as fuel, you'll need to consider the additional costs of spares/servicing; it won't be ruinous, but it is going to cost you more, no questions.
I'd still go for it - a 740 really is a lovely way to travel; if they did an estate version, I'd be driving one now.

Its a 1.2 Micra :-) [Other, more fuel efficient barges are available. If you wish to remain, you must swap the Micra for something though! ]

Get something really economical as a daily - my Panda does a minimum of 55mpg, and can do 80. Makes a few quid chucked in the Impreza now and again bearable!
I've thought about running an eco daily alongside something else more fruity but it doesn't seem to make financial sense unless the daily needs to cover lots of miles. Otherwise, the extra cost of insurance and the other car itself is just 'wasted'. Obviously, in an ideal world, there would be a stable with an ideal vehicle for each occasion. Trustmeimadoctor said:
Its mainly single A road with some DC so bar a few junctions and odd stop its 60/70 all way
What ever I get it will be a daily cant have 3 cars really
From what you're saying, it sounds like you'd be able to get 25mpg from a 740 in that driving. However, doing 15k a year may require a decent bit of routine maintenance or at least some initial work if the E38 owners on here are anything to go by.What ever I get it will be a daily cant have 3 cars really

In all honesty what will a e38 740 4.4 Sport do to a gallon ? How much will it ruin me
How is it being used? 15-25 high and low in normal use, averaging out just the right side of 20 normally.
