A pushbike, black beret, medieval 'smock' and a string of comedy onions as a necklace.

Dodge Ram Diesel.
Preferably one with an older cummins that has the mechinical pump line nozzle VP44 system that's easier to fix.
Failing that, I'd settle for a petrol one that has been converted to run on gasified charcoal

Honda CG125 with knobbly tyres, will go anywhere, uses almost no petrol, very easy to fix. Cant wheelie no matter how hard you give it some throttle.

Our 110XS Defender should do.

Until it breaks down.

335d is no good on anything but tarmac - I'd give mine away ;-)

A 900bhp MkII Golf.

Or a Nissan Patrol with a Mercedes diesel engine.

Depends on how post-industrial things are going to get - it might be necessary to resort to riding down the peasantry on a destrier.

A Transit Jumbo with a load of modifications. Put an oldish and biggish deisel engine in the back, cover it up so it can be used as a table. Make a roof rack that will cover the entire roof, put a few 20 litre jerry cans plus all the other vital stuff.

Every day's a school day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_infantry

Filling station fuel has a limited shelf life, even the diesel. Unless you can find an alternative fuel, your old diesel Landrovers will become carts for horses before long unless you plan to station yourself at a vegetable oil depot.

I'll accept that I can't keep the internal combustion engine for long and take a high powered convertible that will be a fitting swansong for petrol power. I'd want my girlfriend as a front seat passenger, room enough in a boot for supplies and the ability to sling a couple of mountain bikes with a few spares in the back seat- hence the convertible...

Then I'll put on loud classical music and I'd drive out of the city in search of Sanctuary in a gaudy, loud show of automotive intent.
Something like this would do nicely:

I reckon steel plate strikes fear into the heart of one's foes more effectively than Lycra - though it could be a close run thing, I grant you, and those bike couriers are another matter.

I agree- I was just surprised there are still armies using bicycles!

Still, I can ride a bicycle. I've ridden a horse once or twice, and I was crap. I can fix a broken bicycle and I have the tools to do it. I know bugger all about horses apart from which end the poo comes out. hehe

my RRTDV8, hopefully!..definitely a Defender 110 with 2inch lift and full expedition equipped with a few tools/spares/fuelcans on board..nearly bought one the other day but managed to be sensible at the very last minute!..only a matter of time though. Defender is the only vehicle I have consistently regretted selling..

It's the only vehicle we've had that's needed constant TLC, about £5Ks worth of warranty work (only 4 years old!), is pants on fuel, costs the same as a Veyron to tax BUT is so bloody brilliant as "what it does best" that we have never loved a car as much as we do our 110XS! For some reason I just don't mind spending money on it. Anything else would have been sold long ago!

One of those old WW2 American Deuce-and-a-half transports. If i remember correctly they ran on anything remotley resembling petrol/diesel/avation fuel etc.
